Gust0o
I'm pretty sure I've seen this somewhere on Basschat, but was browsing Youtube for inspiration and hit upon: Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's great - it's relentless and harsh. Surely it's not just the choice of Precision, what else is in the mix?
ThomBassmonkey
Sounds to me like he has the whole signal distorted (instead of just distorting the highs) and very strange EQ. Might even be a kind of filter to get that effect.
yorick
Sure there's an Ampeg rig lurking in the background....
Spoombung
You mean the tone of a million pub rock gigs?

Lozz196
Overdriven SD QPs? Probably a Sansamp BDDI or equivalent being used there. I can get that type of sound from mine.

Stuee
Take an Active P Bass, play it with a pick, chuck it into some variant of Ampeg SVT with a cranked input stage and maxed out drive control, and EQ to taste
Mog
Ibby Phat Head on clean mode and comp switch set to 2 will get close. IMO its probably a MXR DI. I really like the way that sits in the mix.
Musky
Could be almost any overdrive in there, but it reminds me of the ODB-3.
Gust0o
Had I posted the Quo, Spoom, you might have been close. Either that, or you sip your shandy in some different places to me Heads Fall was a brilliant album. Had pretty much forgotten all about. Managed to get close with my Eagle after some fiddling - pity I don't like playing pick, as I really like this. Cosmo Valdemar
There does seem to some very strange EQing going on there, but it sounds great. Love the album version too, my drummer and I like to soundcheck with that one.
cd_david
Sounds like it could be a Marshall Guvnor or RAT distortion to me?
dangerboy
My first thought was RAT.

Chris2112
There's nothing special about that, just thump a P bass through a distorted amp. And get someone to mic up a telephone and press buttons randomly to simulate the other sounds in that song.
MythSte
Sounds like my old MXR DI+ that... Personally I can't see it being natural ampeg distortion, its jut not quite right for that and I don't think they'd play at that volume even on Jools. Cosmo Valdemar
There's nothing special about that, just thump a P bass through a distorted amp.
We all know you don't particularly like Fenders, but that is a ridiculous response. I could play a Precision through a distorted Ampeg, followed by a distorted Matamp - two completely different sounds, and neither of which would sound anything like the tone in the clip. Wil
Sounds like an emphasis on the high mids to me, compared to the usual P bass low mid thump.
ZMech
Just to add some variation, try checking out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, I think their bassist has one of the nicest overdriven/distorted sounds i've heard.

Rich
That's a cracking bass tone, really brutal. Just a shame about the rest of the song... oh dear, what a fearful racket.
