Pete Academy Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I was talking to Doddy today about her, as he's just bought the Plantation Lullabies album. I think she's amazing. Her sense of groove is sublime and totally natural. Check out these tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpdzEpGIqtY Amazing bassline and sound. derrenleepoole Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Funnily enough I've just been listening to her covers of Bill Withers 'Who Is He' and Marvin Gaye's 'Make Me Wanna Holler' - absolutely solid versions with killer bass groove and a tone to die for. There's some amazing youtube videos of her live that just absolutely kill! Quote

Platypus Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I really like her version of this song.
Funnily enough I've just been listening to her covers of Bill Withers 'Who Is He'
Quote
Platypus Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I saw her at Th Jazz Cafe in Camden a few months back - great gig, all the better for being in such a small venue. I was just a few feet away from the stage Quote
TheGreek Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011
She's very underrated IMO.
Do you think?? I think she's very highly rated - just not that well known...yet!! Quote
Owen Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011
She's very underrated IMO.
Not in Chez Owen she isn't. She totally rules. Plantation Lullabies, Ben Folds 5 (1st album), Heavy Weather, Dark side of the moon, Corinne Bailey Rae (1st album). They are all truly great albums and totally do it for me. I cannot put them in order but they all always hit the spot. She is one of the great musicians. Quote
Doddy Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 She's great....too funky for her own good. Plantation Lullabies and Peace Beyond Passion are great albums. Owen-good call on the first Ben Folds Five album aswell. Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Calling Bubinga5............... Quote
jakenewmanbass Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I first heard her in a club in Belgium, I was on tour and the sound man was playing Plantation Lullabies after the gig, it was 1994 I knew right then that I would love her forever... *ahem* as a bass player of course. Quote

foal30 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I don't have all her records but the ones i have I very much enjoy she is just a great musician I have Peace BP and Bitter they are two different records but both sound like her which is a great credit to any artist I think. Quote
TKenrick Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Me'shell is definitely one of my favourite players, ridiculous groove and an amazing feel. Some of her simplest lines are really hard to recreate properly because of her articulation. Her part at 2:30 through this always makes me smile: Quote
JimD Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Great player. She plays and sings on "Anomie and Bonhomie" by Scritti Politti. This is a very interesting record and the opening track opens with her bass; even the first note has such a great tone! Quote

There are a couple of guys(including David Dyson) credited, but it doesn't say on which tracks. Quote

I had always assumed that she was the sole bass player but a quick Google suggests as you have that David Dyson and Vere Isaacs are also credited. Sorry for potentially clouding the waters here. Either way, those opening notes are BOSS and the album is fab! Quote
ped Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I think she's excellent, too. Listen to Lynden David Hall's 'Medicine 4 my pain' I also love 'Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape' Actually she plays on 3 of the albums in my car! ped Quote
niceguyhomer Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Must buy some of her stuff, I keep getting wowed by these clips people post. Quote
Kiwi Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I've followed her since her second album, and have seen her live a couple of times. I haven't been so keen with her more recent forays into rock but her attitude is that she's on a journey and you're either with her or not. Quote
gafbass02 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Glad i saw this, ive been meaning to check her out for ages, a trip to the local cd store is in order, So where should I be starting to dip in for maximum funkage? Any to avoid? Quote
Kiwi Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Plantation Lullabies and Peace Beyond Passion are the best in my view. Quote
