Fender 1978 P Bass

Hi all, i purchaed a 1978 P Bass from a guy around 5 years ago. the bass had been refinished by a professional of some sort, it was originally sunburst. The guitar is defo a genuine fender I have had it in bits and teh stamps etc are all there, just the feel and the sound tell you immediately that its a Fender. The only problem is that the made in USA does not appear on the headstock?? the bass has a S8 serial numbeer etc. any ideas??

My 78 has it below the serial number but the decal where it says "made in usa" has come away. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what has happened with yours

I'm pretty sure they didn't put it on them and they were only made in the US then anyway, I'm fairly sure of that. Loads of Fender headstocks don't have Made in USA on them.

Cheers lads, I never doubted it was real or built anywhere other than the states. Just every other 78 ive seen has the made in USA on the headstock.

I just found a picture in a recent Bass Player mag of a '78 Jazz, the headstock decals are exactly the same as yours, except it says Jazz Bass of course.

I think the 70s decals, when they had 'Made in USA' it was very small under 'Precision Bass'

Yup, my 77/78 has it right on the edge of the head, under the IO of precision.

I really should take mine to bits at some point to find out if its a 78 or 77.......

That's a later 70s transfer, the earlier 70s had slightly larger lettering and no made US.

Yep, my 78 p-bass has the 'Made in USA' in the same place on the headstock under the word 'Precision'.

My 78 has it underneath 'Precision' too but as Gareth says, it is common to be missed. One of those old Fender quirks.

Mine has it under the 'Precision Bass' text too - but although mine has an S8xxxx serial number it's actually a '79er as the pots are dated 1979
