Hey everyone, can anyone recomend the best slap bass DVD, i spotted Alexis Sklarevski on you tube and he has a great smoothness to his playing. He also has a DVD out, but looks quite old (not that this matters)...

Any ideas? Buba.. :)
I own the ole Slap Bass Program by Alexis on video.. rather old now, but yeah, does cover the basics and works up on speed to demonstrate machine gun triplets etc...

Bill 'the buddha' dickens has a few DVDs out where he demonstrates his techniques that are quite cool, if a little messy at high speed. Mr Wooton will no doubt get a mention when it comes to slap technique. You may be able to find Stu Hamm's produce out there too.. oh who else.. Did Mark King do one?

The only resource you need is the Tony Oppenheim book and audio disc. As far as I'm concerned it is still the best out there (And I've checked out every single one to my knowledge). Yes if doesn't cover double thumbing ala Wooten, but to be honest, you probably won't use it anyway.
the man is looking for DVDs!!!
I would recommend the wooten and larry graham dvds. both have killer ideas and techiques. worth more than how-2 guide imho.
I'm sure the man can decide if he wants to read my post or not!!!

Buba, if you are new to slap, my comment still stands, buy that book and if you can, get a teacher, even if it is just for one lesson.

If you have money to spare, buy the dvds, be wow'd, but don't expect to play like them anytime soon or have the technique explained in any great depth. If you just want to watch people play slap, go on youtube, its free, and most of the best bits of these dvds are on there anyway.

I can also add Dave La Rue.

But... :) me myself uses Tony's Oppenheim's slap school for now. I didn't get far on that, cuz I've started slappin' on 5string, that means it a lil bit harder to produce 'clean' slap ( for me, of course...) and decided to change my technique from the trad slap to double thumbing. We'll see how it goes

Hey Mikey D
Followed your link and looked/listened and there's some funky stuff going on there ! I need to get me some o' that !!
( :) typed "SLAP IT" into Amazon and it came back with 1 used @ £105.00 !! ;) What gives ?)

Is this book a real rarity ?
(methinks I could acquire a Harry Potter first edition for less  )

Any Ideas where to get one at a reasonable ££ ?? ........ off to the Bay next)

Anyway my two-penerth regarding DVDs..... I cut my teeth on Alexis Sklarevski 'VHS' (now converted to DVD worry not), and its good. Not great ,...good.
It gets you slapping, but it does appear dated now.

They have some on Amazon.com at a much better price, they also tend to pop up on ebay. The older copy doesn't have tab in (The version I used), but the new version does.

More importantly, you can order it directly from Tony at slapit.com (as he now self publishes) at that site for $31 including postage.

Slap Happy by Beaver Felton.
I have it on VHS but dont know If he released it on DVD.
Contact Bass central for details or check out youtube for the intro segment.
This video always makes me smile when I think about how much wasted time I spent, during my spotty youth watching it instead of learning about music and more usefull bass playing.

Beaver has more edge than a broken piss pot but he is a monster player :)
One day, I will find time to make a DVD of my Ultimate Slap Bass book... thanks for the mention!

Until then, if you want a book+CD with over 200 exercises, covering EVERYTHING, it's worth a look ;-)

Stu
No problem Stuart, a genuine recommendation on my part. If you can't slap after following the exercises in the book then you never will. Lots of advanced stuff too once you've got the basics.
cheers
Al.

 • 1 year later...

I tend to find the DVD’s start off really basic then suddenly jump to advanced stuff with no middle ground, but the ED Friedland Slap Bass the Ultimate guide is as good as any and better than most, and cheap.

The Stuart Clayton Ultimate Slap Bass book with CD’s is really the ultimate guide, it will really help you develop your technique and it is very highly recommended and pretty much all you need.

Thanks for the kind words Dave.

If it's of any interest to those reading this thread, I will soon be uploading audio files for all the exercises that were left off of the two CD's that ship with Ultimate Slap Bass - there were just too many exercises in the book to fit on the discs! I will also be adding a whole batch of new exercises of all levels, plus hopefully some videos of some of the lines in the book. All free too!

When it's done (which won't be for a month or two) it'll be on my publishing site: www.basslinepublishing.com

Cheers
Stu

Stu Claytons books is very good as it covers alot of different styles and I would also give a shout out for Jon Leibman's Funk Bass - lots of styles but less around different techniques.

Both great books.

Oh - and Stuart's book has quite a pornographic front cover :)

Sounds great! I shall look forward to that.

BTW if anybody is looking for accurate Level 42 Bass Transcriptions if only as practice exercises, you will find 5 different books at Stu's site
