Bassassin
This one for me, and the first bass line I ever learned: Jon.
spongebob
I did a post on The Stranglers recently, about their newer stuff which I've not heard (a bit scared of after their 80's output after La Folie). Picked up Suite XVI, their last studio album. It's actually pretty good, far better than I expected. There's some great JJ vocals, and a great bass tone throughout. Let's also not forget that the band are also responsible for the best ever cover version, 'Walk On By'. You can also now get their '77 Peel Sessions and some live stuff from the early years on download from Amazon/Play etc. Super Stuff! I love their album tracks - Genetix, Ain't Nothin' To It, Sweden....so much to choose from. And has anyone ever looked cooler playing a P? Hell, his tone has even made me play one! mike f
Been listening to The Stranglers for the past few days now. Watching the Battersea gig on youtube too. Great stuff. JJ on Nice 'n' Sleazy is such an influence on my sound and I first heard it over 20 years ago (not first time round!).
lojo
I've managed convince 2 covers bands (1 rock, 1 pop) to let me put nice n sleazy in the set over the last few years, but both dropped it after a few gigs, because its not a crowd pleaser, but there was always some middle aged bloke with his arms folded who I know love it, shame, I love it Also never got bored of their version of walk on by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrGb7sz8D3Y What bass is he playing here, never knew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6yTRq_rJg4...feature=related Edited February 16, 2011 by lojo

the_skezz
Didn't get me into bass, but very much responsible for the way I see/play it now. Too many great moments to mention; Sleazy, Peaches, Genetix solo, Down in the Sewer, the end of Curfew, the intro to 5 Minutes, and so many others. Lozz196
Definately one of my inspirations to pick up the bass. Can`t wait to see them on their tour March.

yanto
My favourite bit of all is the link between "Do You Wanna" and "Death and Night and Blood"It like the air clears from a malevolent sickness to the thoughts of a coke-fuelled axe murderer about to go on a spree(musically) Brilliant band much under-rated at the time and sadly spurned by the musical press of the day for throwing one of their own out a hotel? window for a bad review. Those were the days.BTW listen to this-I remember the first time I heard this I thought it was the best thing I had ever heard and it still sounds original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRHx22hTGUA Greenday or what? bottlebassman
J.J and The Stranglers are the reason I chose the Bass too. Can't wait to see them at Newcastle in a few weeks!

Steven69
Seen this clip loads of times, and I've never noticed that before!
I've seen several clips from TV shows where they have been miming, and they seemed to "play" instruments other than their usual ones when miming on TV. I've always assumed it was part of them putting two fingers up to these kind of shows. (I'm assuming they are miming in this clip, judging by JJ messing about at the start, but I can't watch with the volume up just now.) Looking forward to the tour as well - I'm going to the Leicester gig. And with Wilko Johnson supporting, does that mean we are getting JJB and Norman Watt-Roy on the same bill? Spike Vincent
Definately miming! I'm pretty sure they didn't use their own kit on TOTP and similar programmes,I assume there wasn't a black P bass to be scrounged that day!
dougie
Going to see them in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks, first biggish gig ive been to in a couple of yrs,yea JJ brought bass to my attention way back in the 70s,not heard any of the new stuff should be fun
spongebob
I'm also now going as I've booked my tickets for the Brighton Dome (see other 'off topic' post). I've never seen them live, so I'm really looking forward to catching JJ, one of my top 3 bassists, and a real inspiration. I read something recently with them saying that with Jet about 70 or something, they may slow things down in the near future....so I really want to see them whilst I can. I bought the last album after it was praised on here as a return to form, and I really like it. See you down the front!
Lozz196
Yeah, the last cd was excellent. Have a look on youtube for Rattus at The Roundhouse. Gives a good indication of their current sound, but live. And is awesome.
menolikeslap
Wasn't one song in general, but the Specials and some of Primus' stuff got me interested in playing the bass.
