This certaily doesn't look like the right order of body woods: Maple/Walnut/Alder/Walnut/Maple ... It's more likely W/M/A/M/W. And it's hot!
I've amended the post as I believe the timber is mahogany/walnut/alder/walnut/mahogany..

From some of the PMs that I've received there seems to be some confusion about this bass and where it's made..I'm managed to gather more info about this fine bass to clarify that it was made in the USA..

Ok...I was in my friend's shop trying to figure out how to spend my store credit, when the UPS man came in with a box from Fender. Of course, being the nosey MFer that I am, I opened the box to find one of the new American Zone basses, this was the Walnut/Mahogany/Walnut version (they also come Flame Maple/Alder/Flame Maple). Holy cripes! It was beautiful! I've been waiting for the new Victor Bailey Jazz basses with the Koa tops to show up but I haven't seen one yet. I had already played the Maple version of the Zone bass, so I had a head start.

The main difference in the Bailey and this is the woods, the smaller body on the Zone and that the Bailey uses the Noisless Jazz bass pickups, while the Zone has soapbars. Let me say this: Fender has now turned the corner and joined the 21st century.

In all respects this bass hits the mark. It is rock solid in construction....this walnut version is totally reminiscent of the Alembic Europa I once owned, although it is a bolt on neck. The fretwork is impeccible, they really paid attention to detail. The fit and finish is tight as a drum and the electronics sound freakin' amazing. These soapbars give you a very broad and "tied together", smooth low end and the highs can almost be compared to a Stingray....yet it still sounds like a Fender somehow. I imagine that's the sonic difference too between these and the Victor Bailey Jazz pickups....but I'd have to A/B them. My only gripe: they're sticking with the standard Fender Deluxe string through body bridge. I'm much rather see them using a Hipshot or ABM style rear loading brass bridge on this model. I plan on doing that modification on my own instrument. I walked out with it.....she's all mine. Sitting proudly and with equal respect next to the MTD 535's. If I see a Victor Bailey Jazz and it's as nice as this, I'm in big trouble....lol.

Here's another review: http://www.bgra.net/2004/review.php?id=1962&type=bass

This is a like new guitar, it has virtually no signs of use. The case has one tiny scuff which can be seen below the right lock and some very minor scuffs around the edges of the case A sleek design rendered in exotic tone woods. With the Fender American Deluxe Zone Bass, you have a choice of body woods: flamed maple over alder or walnut over mahogany. The body is smaller, a shape reminiscent of the P Light, but with more sculpting. The American Deluxe has special Noiseless pickups with 18V active preamp circuitry that is uniquely designed to enhance the natural sound and tonal range of the Zone Bass. Fender finished the American Deluxe Zone Bass beautifully in every detail. Fender American Deluxe Zone Bass Includes: hardshell case Mahogany Body With A Clear Coated Multi Layered Walnut Top. Fender Active Soapbar Pickups, Gold Hardware, Maple Neck with a Rosewood Fretboard and Fender Lyte Tuners. This Unique Bass was Fenders Answer to High End Bass Maufacturers. Zones Basses offer cutting edge features including newly designed pickups and electronics, and in the case of the American Deluxe version, a choice of exotic woods.

"This is a very ambitious step for Fender basses," says Richard McDonald, vice president of electric guitars for Fender. "We’ve put a great deal of effort over the past few years in finding out exactly what players want in a contemporary bass. What we’ve come up with is this new line of Zone basses, and we are very proud of the results."

The American Deluxe Zone Bass is one of Fender’s first ventures into the realm of exotic wood basses, offering a choice of either a highly figured maple top over alder, or a walnut top over mahogany. Engineers in Fender’s Research and Development have spent the last two years designing an entirely new electronic platform to match and maximize the tonal characteristics of each of the options, including new hum canceling pickups designed to increase the low frequency response and extend the upper frequency range. Both neck and bridge pickups are designed with ferrous steel pole pieces contained within the core of each bobbin. They are driven with low-profile, wide area ceramic magnets located at the base of each pickup, with the ceramic magnets offering optimal strength and excellent string transfer characteristics that result in incredible clarity and articulation. The unique sonic nature of the exotic woods and their body mass require electronics that can bring the most out of these instruments. To accommodate this, the new American Deluxe Bass circuit is tweaked at the input stage - pre-shape, boost and EQ settings - to match and compliment the instrument’s characteristics. The Bass frequencies are centered at 40Hz± 12db with a 4db per octave slope, while the Treble is centered at 8 kHz± 10db with a 2db per octave slope, with the Treble cut working as a more passive control for warm, organic tones. The Mid control is centered at 500Hz± 10db and -15db, with a wide-band slope to bring out the growl and new distinctive voices of the electronics. The circuit is powered by a new 18 Volt supply. The bridge on the American Deluxe Zone Bass is deluxe chrome plated steel. The maple neck is C-shaped has a 34" scale, 9.5" radius with a rosewood fingerboard and 22 frets. This bass is made at Fender’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Corona, California.

Hope that this clarifies any queries about the origin of this bass and conveys the quality..

Beautiful bass, but I think these only came in maple or walnut top. So I think yours is Walnut/maple/mahogany/maple/walnut.

Wish I could justify buying it!

I think you'll find that any issues are with the MIM models that feature the single pole P/J pups. The original USA-made model shipping with humbuckers and, as far as I know, are fault-free.
