Bay Splayer
was jamming along to freakout by chic the other day and noticed that when i was playing along to the middle eight section, my bass sounded out of tune, yet during verse and chorus it sounded fine. would this be an intonation issue and if so, is this something you need to pay the tech people for or is it something that can be sorted at home. any advice much appreciated, thanx. Jean-Luc Pickguard
To check the intonation - Using an electronic tuner can you see if the harmonic over the 12th fret is exactly the same pitch as the fretted note at the 12th for each string? If not it needs setting up properly. Its definitely worth learning how to do your own setups as it really is money for old rope once you get the hang of it and understanding how everything interacts will enable you to set up your instrument exactly how you like it. bigjohn
You can do it by ear - although easier if you check the harmonic against the 12th fretted note. And even easier with a tuner Just adjust the length of the string by moving your bridge saddles to get each one right.
Paul Cooke
was jamming along to freakout by chic the other day and noticed that when i was playing along to the middle eight section, my bass sounded out of tune, yet during verse and chorus it sounded fine. would this be an intonation issue
not necessarily... they might have changed key or mode for the middle 8 and you got caught out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APtTBODUfd8 you decide... he doesn't shift up the bass much... a few frets that's all... it's not like he's going up from below the 5th to around the 12th... anyway... he really makes that funk look easy...
