warwickhunt Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Just a quick question that Sterling or MM/EB owners/specialists may be able to answer; is the rear pup in the same place on both guitars? Quote

Obviously I'm after knowing if the rear pup on both basses is placed in 'exactly' the same place or was the rear pup on the $$ placed a bit further forward/back from the bridge to accommodate either the fitting/aesthetics/sound of the extra pup? Duarte Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 After suffereing that drum sound through my huge system...I can tell you that they are in EXACTLY the same place. You get all the same sounds. And more...Only the Bongo has the pickup moved, because of the 24 fret neck. Quote
Musicman20 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Yep, same sounds plus a lot more. I hear from owners the rear pup sound us EXACTLY the same. I decided to go with a 4 string HH Ray purely because...why not?! Quote

If I end up going for a 2 pup bass I want to be sure that the rear pup on the twin pup will sound exactly the same as the single pup bass (variation between any two basses taken into account) as that's the sound I liked on my last Sterling; added to which I prefer the look of the single pup so if I whip the front pup out then I can just fit a standard Sterling single pup scratchplate and it'll disguise the hole... who needs versatility; I'm the bass player, I only use one sound live! danhkr Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Whilst we're at it, is it the back switch position on a H sterling that 'is most like' a standard stingray pickup? Quote
Duarte Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011
Whilst we're at it, is it the back switch position on a H sterling that 'is most like' a standard stingray pickup?
Well The Sterling HH is wired in series, so the back switch position is the back humbucker wired in series - the stingray is parallel. So it's 'most like' the stingray, but slightly different due to that. This also means that the other 2 positions on the H sterling are sacrificed (parallel and single coil mode) on the HH Sterling. Quote
Musicman20 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 HS gives you single coil mode plus all the series modes...all you lose is parallel but you gain all those other tones Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Dont Sterlings have ceramic pup magnets anyway? So a $$ Sterling even in parallel mode wouldnt sound exactly like a Stingray it would sound exactly like a single $ Sterling. Quote
waynepunkdude Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 I believe they have that vibe though. Quote
Duarte Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 (edited) Wow...that happened a few more times than I intended. Definitely have that vibe though... Edited February 26, 2011 by Duarte Quote
waynepunkdude Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 What are the positions on a Sterling H? (have one coming on Tuesday) Quote
Duarte Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Closest to bridge - Parallel Middle - Single (bridge) coil Closest to neck - Series My favorite is actually the single coil. Quote

stingrayPete1977 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Viiiibe, you got it, Viiiibe you got that vibe. Cant remember who sang that? but there you go, Enjoy it. Quote
Musicman20 Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Yeah the ceramic sounds edgier, more modern, but to be honest, with EQ you could probably make is the same. Put it this way, if you want to be heard in a mix, the Sterling WILL get you there! I havent had much time with one, but I have a 5 HS on order and im really excited! Quote
