Bigwan
Hi Guys, I've just joined a new covers band and I'm not great at transposing songs in my head to suit singers with a less than full range so would prefer to learn songs by playing along. Does anyone know of a free program that could change the key of recorded music for me to jam along to? I know I could get midi tracks and change the key but would prefer recorded music - a bit more real-world... Paul Cooke
bestpractice... http://www.xs4all.nl/~mp2004/bp/
BestPractice is a musician's practice tool, to slow down or speed up music, either from an MP3 file or directly from a CD. Ordinarily the sound is distorted when slowed down our sped up - you get the effect like when playing a 33 rpm record on 45 rpm speed (remember the Chipmunks?). BestPractice tries to correct this, so you can slow down and speed up music, while keeping the original pitch. It is also possible to change the pitch of the music without affecting its tempo. Play along with for instance Eb tuned guitars without retuning your own, or slow down that high-speed guitar solo on a CD that you like to learn.
open source and completely free

Peaty
Or if you use quick time go to the window menu and choose show AV controls. In the AV controls you can shift pitch and or speed. Amazing slowdowner is another option. http://www.ronimusic.com/ Pete

Seen Studio64 but not tried it yet. Wasn't it on the cover of LXF recently? Probably got it somewhere... Kristal is excelent too for Windies users - good interface, 16-track desk for free with loadsaplugins.

Paul Cooke
karafun easy to use change tempo change key FREE
Excellent... it plays .ogg files... something bestpractice currently doesn't do and the author keeps claiming to be getting around to but hasn't so far... It also plays .avis so hopefully I can use it to playback videos and keep the sound running, currently, slowing down DVDs or any video files kills the sound... Now to download karafun and see how it runs on Linux using WINE oh b****** it wants DirectX v9.0... well, that's ruled out running it on Linux... Thanks
Bestpractice to change pitch and save to .wav lame -h input.wav output.mp3 then run Lame in command line mode on the .wav to convert it to MP3 http://www.gnuware.com/icecast/chap_04_03.html simple command of : lame -h input.wav output.mp3 change input and output to whatever you need get Lame from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/Lame_Encoder_download.htm (the above isn't an official download link, those can't distribute any method of encoding higher than 128bps as it would be an infringement of some stupid patent)
