1983 US Fender Jazz - SOLD

For sale is my 1983 Fender Jazz that I bought from Tom1946 in December.
The only reason for sale is that I have my eye on an old Precision, and I haven't fallen in love with this enough (even though it's a 'birth year' bass) to keep it.....I just keep reaching for my '73 J.

Sienna Burst, slim maple neck, rare (for the era) two piece scratchplate/control plate. An example of this can be seen in the 'The Fender Bass: An Illustrated History' book, page 79.

Obviously the funny shadow here is my reflection, not the finish

The case has some bumps and scrapes etc, but perfectly useable....actually it's quite nice to have a hardcase that doesn't resemble a rifle case lol.

When I took the pickups out for the bridge to be rewound, thought it looked cool lol, although the iPhone makes the burst look a bit rubbish. It's genuinely a stunning finish.

I paid a tiny tiny bit under 1k for this, it's in very very good condition for a 27 year old bass. I had the bridge pickup rewound by Wizard pickups as it was seemingly an open circuit when I received it, plus 1 new pot which replaced a dodgy replacement lol. Also comes with a small, non-original hardcase.
And so price is [s]£1000[/s] £950 + p&p, but collection/meet up very much preferred

Cheers
Si

P.s.
Had the neck off and this is October '83 :)

Oh it's a great bass, stunning to look at, really fast neck, genuine Jazz tones.....I just haven't bonded with it enough to not sell it in favor of a 70's Precision lol. Plus as I said, my '73 Jazz is just the go-to bass :)
I will get a YOB Jazz one day but this one will have to pass me by
Do it, it's definitly cooler than a Jaguar :)

Cheers all

But I have just taken delivery of a Sterling and I'm in love with it, I will get one one day.

Good luck with the sale buddy not that you should need it at the price you have it at.

sibob would you say the jazz tones you mentioned are closer to those of the 70's jazzers, ie. bridge pup closer to bridge and funkier brighter etc, or..what? I don't imagine the 80's builds taking a route back to the classic 60's jazz bass sounds so i think my question, is, finally..what does the 83 era offer in terms of the jazz sound?

I certainly get what you're asking. I would say the '83 has a lot more in common with my '73 tone wise, than my '03. I know for sure that my '03 has 60's spacing, and tends to sound a bit more rounded, whereas the '83 seems to share that 70's-esque nasal quality on the bridge pickup.
Having said that I haven't noticed the pickup spacing, so will take a look tonight :)

Bridge pickup directly over the tone control.......Looks like 70's spacing to me.

Yes Gjones is right, it's 70's spacing. This bass and my '73 are both approx 34mm between bridge and pickup, my '03 (60's spacing) is approx 46mm. It would certainly explain it's 70's-esque tonal qualities.

Cheers buddy, really good to meet you and have a chat, how was sunday?

Sunday was much quieter (both in volume terms and number of people) - vaguely good news for me on both counts as mu voice finally went around lunchtime, lol.

Very nearly sold a Fodera custom as well - now waiting with baited breath to see if the potential customer gives Phil a call this week. . .
Hi, do you know this originally had the one piece scratchplate/control plate ?
That's what all those extra holes were for!
(used to have one)!
Not necessarily. From 83 to 85 it was a time of transition. Inventories from previously produced models were used in some new instruments during this time. This Jazz may not have had a one-piece pickguard fitted originally, although the extra holes may suggest that this was the case. Anyway, it's a cracking looking bass and worthy of the asking price.

I was led to believe when I purchased this that the current 2-piece is original, but I suppose anything is possible?!.
If anything, I think this looks better, not keen on the single-piece ones....aren't they single ply too?!.
Have to say, the screws didn't even even register with me when I took the plate off, must have been late/early lol.

I've said to myself that I might take a G&L Tribute L2000 in part ex, preferably in Sunburst, obviously with the rest in cash.

Gonna try and do some sound clips today!
Cheers for all the comments guys :)

I had one of these in the eighties, same colour, year, maple fb. Mine had the single ply one piece plate. If yours has been modded I wouldn't be put off it, it's definitely an aesthetic improvement, I hated the one piece on mine!

I'm feeling a bit like the bad guy here. I bought this from here for £1195:

http://classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/basses/siennajazz.htm

As you can see it is original apart from the pots which were changed at some point. I trust Mark's judgement on this and on any other bass that I've bought from him. When I sent this to Bob it was working perfectly. I can only assume that any problems occured in transit.

I have apologised for any misunderstanding with this, when I first read the advert it sounded as though I deliberately sold a bass that wasn't working properly. I would never do that. I have lost over £200 on this bass.

Tom.

Sorry Tom, I certainly didn't mean for it to sound like you're the bad guy, far from it!
As we've discussed previously, the issue with the pickup may not have been picked up (sic) even if it had been present before transit. It was still giving output, but just sounded weak/thin, so I had it checked out. But yes, very possibly happened in transit, they do get rattled around.

Cheers
Si
