spongebob
I've had my own Myspace page for about 3 years, but like so many others, have given up on it totally. I can't even get to my page page in the normal way now, let alone add to or change it! Thing is, it was a handy ad when applying to bands or putting myself out there, via the songs and pictures, etc. The songs were a mix of covers and a few originals. Question is, is there an alternative place or set-up where I can do the same again, just put some sounds and pictures, and like MS use it for anybody to check me out? I never want to even see MS3 again!
Wil
Bandcamp is good for hosting/selling music losslessly. Soundcloud is another good one, although I've not used it myself.
Doctor J
Reverbnation seems to be picking up a lot of myspace evacuees. We've just set up our own site. It's easy to stream mp3s. No ads, no crap, no having to promote several different media outlet sites ever again. Edited March 7, 2011 by Doctor J

Low End Bee
Reverbnation links in with Facebook nicely. Myspace is just a horrible mess now.
Beedster
Facebook, easier to network with non-musos

Couldn't even delete pics of our old drummer? What happened to it?
Jigster
never sure, does facebook have music upload?
Happy Jack
We seem to get decent results from Lemonrock. Cheap'n'cheerful, but it works OK.
mike257
never sure, does facebook have music upload?
It does have a music feature now, but a better plan is to use the ReverbNation 'Band Profile' app or the RootMusic 'BandPage' app to create a more fully featured tab within your bands Facebook page. There's loads of stuff on t'interwebs about how to set one up, but they're dead easy (although will require a ReverbNation or RootMusic account setting up - worth having anyway). They seem to have a pretty similar set of features, but basically allow you to create a page that has your music, pics, vids, gig dates etc in a decent layout and easy to update. *Edit for spelling fail!* Edited March 7, 2011 by mike257

derrenleepoole
Another vote for Soundcloud. There's also an iPod app support for the site as well, which works really well and is another good way to get your music out to other listeners if you choose to use it. JTUK
We pay about £60 for our own site etc. That didn't include build though... but at least it looks pretty decent and different which is the problem when you use everyones else's template

Great idea and the dropbox element is VERY useful for remote recording
Cat Burrito
Another vote for Bandcamp. Have a Facebook page, have our own page too but it is all there to plug Bandcamp. Bandcamp actually gets hits and sales too which is a bonus
chris_b
I heard on R4 at the weekend that one of Rupert Murdoch’s companies just bought MySpace. For that reason alone, and as it's plainly crap these days, everyone should be looking for an alternative.

It would be staggeringly old news, even for the Home Service. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4697671.stm More likely, they're trying desperately to find someone who'll buy it. Fortunately we can go somwhere else, and it's a better analysis anyway. So long as you acceot the only thing that matters is the interests of the shareholders. If anyone on BassChat has access to VC funding, speak up now, we could all chip in a few quid on top and make a bid. It never ceases to amaze me that so called senior managers of these companies can completely f*** up something that should have been a success and still claim they did all right.
"The new MySpace experience has been very well received by the market and we have some encouraging traffic metrics in the last several weeks. However, we recognize that the plan to allow MySpace to reach its full potential may be best developed under a new ownership structure and we’re evaluating those strategic alternatives."
Yeah, right.
