NO sneer intended! I can see exactly where he was coming from.

As I keep reminding myself, at the time these were just workhorse basses, nuthin' special.

Haha, fair play. It was done by an old guy who still wanted to gig the bass but couldn't deal with the weight.

That's probably more important than having a mint 100% original relic for some collector to keep in it's case in some warehouse in Slough.

I let out a physical moan when I saw them! A shame really. Makes me want to never mod anything I own ever again!

Well, y'know what they say about hindsight being 20/20. Anyway, I'm in general agreement with the good Mr. winks.

Great place to store your stash going through US customs though. Did I say stash, I meant plectrums.

In the old days when I was racing bikes, and before titanium and carbon, guys used to do things like that to hardware. That;s until people started having very nasty crashes as equipment started collapsing.

I don't mind it. If you can't see it or hear it, it ain't there. I guess if it turned out to have been done by The Ox or Jaco, it would be worth a fortune and we'd all be commenting on how innovative it was :)
What a muppet. :) How much weight was actually saved by wrecking the bass in that way?
No no no - that's completely unfair, seriously it is.

When he did that to his own bass, it was a cheap old thing in poor nick, which he probably couldn't give away. By modifying it drastically (but invisibly) he prolonged its life as a useful instrument.

I'm not trying to be all po-faced here. The whole "Didn't he realise ..." thing is 20/20 hindsight. At the time, nobody realised what these would be worth one day.

Just like the sad kid at school who kept his Dinky toys in their original packaging. What a prat, eh? :)

I wasn't even considering the increase-in-value aspects.

I seriously doubt it made much difference to the weight anyway - hence the stupidity of disfiguring the bass (whatever it was/is worth).

look here to see what can be done, the one in the OP doesnt seem so bad.Maybe something to consider when you find that "all original except for body re-fin" ?

do you see where the bass is coming from?SEATTLE
one of the most humid city in u.s.a.
so the guy was cleaver , made the hole to the bass so humidity would go through the bass and won't effect or crack the wood

When I see mods to old Fenders, I always try to take into account the fact that it's only been the last few years that they've become these collectible pieces, and that the owners back then just did what they thought would make the bass more usable for them.

But this one really makes me cringe. I can see what he was going for, and he's achieved that, but it's just such a radical measure to have taken on an otherwise beautiful bass.

It's still a beautiful bass though, it's all hidden under the pickguard. If you saw someone gigging it you wouldn't know what was under there!

Tbh it's a gigging bass and has been modded by an amateur to ensure it's working life was extended. The fella bought the bass and it's his do do with as he wishes, whether he acheived his goal in making the bass more comfortable is up for debate, but the bridge mod is a practical one which no doubt improved the intonation.

They're just planks of wood with metal on, not even particularly high quality or well constructed ones either. Not every early Fender has to be a piece of bass history, some will live out their days on stages where they belong until their necks warp, the truss rods snap and the bridges corrode. The collectors can have them then!
