Sumbabba
I'm touring with an afrobeat orchestra over the next couple of weeks and I've been asked what my second and third choices would be for a rig if my first choice of an Ampeg SVT & 8x10 cab are not available. Now I've always used Ampegs for big gigs so don't really know what else is out there that can match them for power and that heavy bass tone. Any one got any ideas as to what I could ask for? JTUK
I think the Mesa Boogie 1516 is a much better cab than the Ampeg 8x10 myself. Do you want that one piece type of cab? Other makers of 8x10's include Aguilar, Mesa and Ashdown but we are talking the UK marker here. Where is the tour...as sometimes you get what is more readily available rather than a proper choice? Lozz196
Possibly take a look at Orange, incredibly powerful gear. The Terrors eq isn`t the most versatile, but with a DI such as Sansamp BDDI/MXR M-80 you have much more control over it. Or the Orange AD200 - 200 watt all-valve head. JTUK
Don't know the Orange amps well these days... but Ashdown is often provided as an alternative in just a big top and 8x10 config. I'd go Aguilar DB751 and Ag 8x10...or 2 DB4x10 myself. But you could maybe stick with big Valves and use the MesaB 400 types. I am assuming you'll have decent on-stage mixes and decent foldback/side fills anyway Edited March 9, 2011 by JTUK
Sumbabba
Thanks guys, it's a UK tour so all those options should be available. I'll probably go for the Orange Terror + 8x10 and the Aguilar DB751 + 8x10. Will be interesting to hear these rigs if the Ampeg isn't available. Muzz
I take it you're not lugging them about yourself, then?
Sumbabba
Oh most definitely not, I need my back for gigs!
chris_b
This Ampeg rig is standard hire company fare. If they can't supply it try for an Ampeg 410. My choice for next backup would be Eden. Hire companies might have Mesa Boogie, Hartke or Marshall but it’s unlikely they'll have much else! It’s academic really as the FOH will be providing 100% of your sound to the audience. chrismuzz
I love my Markbass stuff, and they do 8x10 cabs too! Whoever lugs your gear around will thank you too
