Wil
So, this thread is intended as a consolidated place for basschatters to get their recordings reviewed. It may well not work, but worth a go! The rule is, in order to post your own recording up for review, you must first listen to the piece posted before yours and offer an honest, constructive review. No need for war and peace, just take the time to listen to your fellow basschatter's offerings and offer a few thoughts. To get things started, someone post a recording (if no one does I'll be forced to post one of my own, and you dont want that)! ped
Nice idea. I have a short clip at hand of a full song, I'll replace it when I track the full version down!! Hops it's OK, I'm sure some people here have heard it before, even.. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/85432/USB%203/Stic...20Situation.mp3 Basically a clip from an album that's still being mixed down and finished... that's my brother on drums and pissing about in the vocal booth... just a bit of a laugh really! The bass comes through very nicely - is that your Vigier? Sounds clear as a bell. I particularly like the parts where it drops out and back in, it's nice to hear a bit of space in a recording. All in all, very funky, nice job Here's a track I'm working on at the moment. No bass on it currently - to be honest I dont think it would sound right without a fretless or an upright, neither of which I have currently. It's the first outing for my recently aquired violin (£20 off ebay - bargain!). The violin is really tasteful - I wish I had the patience to try and learn something similar. Kinda reminds me of the slower sections in some Brand New Tracks. I'd love to hear a really fragile female vocal over it. This is my lots latest demo, a few vocals are missing as are a few cues, but I like it so far http://soundcloud.com/mythste/martin-rimmer p.s, great Idea Wil
WHUFC BASS
I quite like that, reminds me of early Deep Purple in places. Quite a blanced mix although for some reason the crash cymbal sounds over compressed. Good mix apart from that. Our effort from our first album... I see what you meant about the guitar solo in another thread, I think it'd probably be much improved with a proper valve amp mic'd up - tonewise it's a bit fizzy. Besides that, it's great. Bass cuts through nicely but it's not overly harsh, nice sparkly top end. Edited March 10, 2011 by Wil

Captures the fire of the bands of the time, but with a more up to date feel. . Just great punk power, I'd love to hear it through a hi-fi, will figure how to do that eventually. Hopefully attached is our effort for promoters, 1 track of 5 track CD (warning, old fart rockers alert). The mix sounds great through my old Technics hi-fi, yet absolutely crap through my laptop. I found in places that the tempo fluctuated. Maybe an idea to get the drummer to play with a click-track. 2. Guitar was a touch quite - both rhythm and lead 3. Bass cut through very nicely, just needs to be less busy in places and it will improve the song no end. 4. Vocals were on the whole very good, just could do with coming up in the mix slightly. Aside from that, not a bad effort at all... reminded me of Bad Company in parts.

Not the 1st time I've had the "busy", and very true sadly. Our SkinsMeister has a T Shirt "How do you want it, too fast or too slow" . We are just a live pub/covers band (except for couple of tracks like that one), so "demo" studio etc, completely novice. Cheers for pointers, Karl. stonecoldbass
Cool thread guys! Here is my bands EP, with one original tune (penned by yours truly) and I also mixed and mastered the thing. We're all pretty proud of how it turned out, but would appreciate any feedback you guys may have as we have still to get round to pressing hard copies. http://soundcloud.com/pickpocket-1/sets/pickpocket-the-stolen Hope you like it! ivok80
Awesome! Exactly my cup of tea! Reminds me of Freddie Hubbard in places... great effort guys! Have you got a website where i can find out about gigs? Here's a spotify link to my album which i did earlier this year. As old-fashioned as it sounds, i would have to describe the style as 'jazz-funk':-) Vinzenz Benjamin – Solid State Feedback please! stonecoldbass
Thanks Ivok80! Some of the early Hubbard stuff is awesome, so I appreciate the comparison! Just listening to your album just now, very cool. Great clean production, tight ass playing and some classic bass tones man! What gear did you use? ivok80
Thanks for the link. I used mostly fender jazz basses. The album was recorded in many different studios, but all mixed in pro tools through a toft 32 channel console.

Thought the snare was a bit "hot" but when the horns came in it was just right. Loverly reverb on the trumpet, expert guitar solo (wish I could play like that). Good bass groove. Nice tight ending. Edit: clicking on the files in the quote opens them and iTunes is now playing ... Transpire The rhythm sounds like it should be african drums but its all different instruments with a guitar that sounds a bit like John Lennon playing slide on an Epiphone Casino, then a nice little bassy break which builds up with drums & other things getting added until we get back to the original groove. There's a lot of instruments in that mix. Urora Lovely fretless intro. Then more african drums. The electric bass is not always an easy instrument to feature in a full mix hence a lot of bands include a bass solo in the breakdown of a song. But here is a really good attempt at making it the lead instrument and Steve manages it without the bass splatting everything else in the mix. Well done Sir! (how did you do it or is that a trade secret?) Edited March 19, 2012 by musophilr
ShergoldSnickers
This has got some favourable comments on another thread, much to my surprise. As explained elsewhere, the core of the song was done in one take as improvised, and then cut down, with various keyboard noises added afterwards. Still to be finally mixed but not far off. Lots of nice variation around the theme, kept my interest throughout. Reminds me of Pink Floyd, in terms of style. Will this eventually be tracked with mic'd instruments? It'd be nice to hear real cello/keys/sax on there with some room ambience. Melodically it's a nice track, well done! Here's an old demo I'm currently working on. Need to add some more sections, flesh out the vocal and re-record the guitars amped up (current guitars are guide tracks done with amplitube).
