Nice. Lots of nice variation around the theme, kept my interest throughout. Reminds me of Pink Floyd, in terms of style. Will this eventually be tracked with mic'd instruments? It'd be nice to hear real cello/keys/sax on there with some room ambience. Melodically it's a nice track, well done!

Here's an old demo I'm currently working on. Need to add some more sections, flesh out the vocal and re-record the guitars amped up (current guitars are guide tracks done with amplitube).

Nice idea for a thread Wil, I'll take up the baton :)

I really liked the track actually, the vocal line over the verse harmony was really nice, and the variation in the chorus was nice - the song felt it was going somewhere. The middle 8 was the part I liked the least, (but one part has to be I suppose) but the ending made up for it, stick some vocals over that (IMHO) and that could be a really epic end to a great track. I notice its a work in progress, I'd be interested to hear how it finished up.

Here's one of mine, it's a modern classical narrative kind of thing done in Sibelius 7.

Not really the kind of thing I would sit down and listen too but its pretty good overall. the first 2 minute or so reminded me of the music from the discworld games and Simon the sorcerer. I don't know if that's the type of thing you where going for but I did come over all nostalgic for a moment which is a good thing ...right?

Well put together and fairly well structured overall, if not a little bland.

Would be excellent in a point and click adventure!

First off: great riff!

I've got to be honest, I've never been fond of hip-hop or rap/rock, and this is probably a bit heavier than I'd normally go plump for myself. That aside, your vocalist might sit better in the mix with a little more reverb - more so on the rappy bits than the shouty bits. The band does come across really well; there's certainly no shortage of energy. Makes me think you guys must be good live!

Right, someone else's turn:

Edit for the wary: lively, melodic rock and roll with a hint of the blues. If you're into that kind of thing.

I feel extremely silly posting an entirely new thread to try to get my EP reviewed... when this thread was here the whole time.
Sorry about that! I did say in my stupid thread that I haven't really got to grips with forums yet. Haha.

Anyhoo, I'd love to hear what you guys think about my EP 'Can't Sleep In Silence'. You can listen to it for free here on Routenote.
Just thought I'd add; I'm working on a full album at the moment that I'm hoping will be out in the autumn! Boo-yah!
Okay, thanks a lot!

EDIT: Just seen the whole rule about reviewing the previous post first! Oops. So I listened to Cherry White. Pretty well written songs, your singer has an interesting voice! And I'm not saying that as a casual way of saying that it's rubbish... cos it's not. I genuinely mean she has an interesting voice. Haha! My favourite song was probably 'The Price'. I found her voice to suit the more stripped-back sound a little better. 'Superman' was cool too. I liked the groove in that one! I also liked the start of 'Empty City'. I like it when everything comes in all at once. That's what she said. My criticisms would be that the EP as a whole doesn't sound super-well mixed. It's decent though!! It's more like a very very good demo. I hope you're proud of it. :)

*Moments later*
AH! I just realised, your singer's voice reminds me of a less wobbly Gwen Stefani! I imagine she gets that a lot?

Great thread idea, shame its not used more!

Can't Sleep in Silence - nicklathambass

As a non-professional musician and only occasional listener to instrumental music (Meters, Booker T and some classical world type stuff my main exceptions) I don't feel best placed to judge Nick's five tracks here. However, in the spirit of the thread, here goes...

Overall, without knowing the back story, I'd say impressive as there's little to knock. It comes across as very well played, nicely arranged and well recorded (when listened back through a laptop). There is a good mix of light and shade, the tracks express emotion and I'm sure that a lot of people will find them ticking a lot if not all of their boxes.

There are two aspects that don't work for me but to be fair, these comments are my general views on this type of music rather than Nick's tunes in particular: Firstly, in the absence of vocals, the playing is quite busy at times which is fine for the odd song, break or fill but over does it for me (particularly here on Bounce). Secondly, The bass tone is high in the mix and while I'm often heard saying that 'you can't have too much bass', I mean it in a warmer, supportive way, holding a track together, cutting through when required but sharing a track's focus. These tracks feel like backing tracks to the bassline which, for me, detracts from the music and makes it more technical exercise. Different strokes for different folks... I know these two points are highly subjective as I can happily listen to the likes of John Entwistle whereas no matter how good, impressive and expressive I know Jaco was, in the context of a band does little for me emotively. This technicality is demonstrated for me in Closure which I thought was played on an acoustic classical guitar to start with but as the track developed I became more certain its played on bass. Clever, but if it sounds like a guitar, I'd prefer to hear a guitar.

The previous paragraph goes some way to explain my opening point but these tracks demonstrate far more than technical competence. The highlight track for me is Hammerhead and opening to The Overlap. I found all tracks very listenable and at no point did I feel like skipping to the next track. I'd say add some vocals and these and I would have a very different opinion - but I guess that's the point. One that unfortunately I don't get...

Your turn...

The Instamatics first album Something just clicked.
Flashback to a five-bulb pop of new wave creations and soul-styled dirty leaps. Flashforward to silver-tinged whiskers and a lick of the old-fashioned pause button. Pressed under the modern weight of valve-spaced greats since 68, The Instamatics are here to take a picture. Peel back for taste. Open up for sound. And enjoy.

Twelve tracks - any comments will be greatly appreciated
