I'm very interested, but I have to know - is it worth converting my Jazz's jack into a side jack for this nice bit of hardware, or is it a cardinal sin to butcher my main bass for an active EQ?

It's easy enough to remove the Passive Tone Control and replace with thejack thus making it an ordinary J Retro. I went the other way and converted a normal to a De-Luxe. it's pretty simple.
