Catching your opponent off-guard and pouncing on the Crescent as the very first move of the game is seriously frowned upon and flouts the spirit of the contest. The last person to try this, a Mr. Kobayashi if memory serves, found himself ostracised for doing this very thing. He ended up in a travelling circus as some sort of freak show, where punters were invited to try to last more than a minute in a game with him and offered the prospect of £25 and a custard doughnut if they managed it. Of course it was all a fix and the Kobayashi Manouvre was employed every time. Quote
