Heres another contribution from me :)

ACG J-type





The spec
Black Limba body with a Flame Maple top and black contrast veneer.
7 piece Maple/Bubinga neck with a Mac Ebony board Flame Maple headplate Black Limba backplate and heel.
ACG filter pre-amp and ACG FB pickups in a jazz style narrow soapbar.

Black dyed maple burl top.
For the neck, flamed maple center with wenge stringers and zebrawood outers.
Purpleheart fingerboard.
Lightweight swamp ash for the body.
Wooden pickup covers & knobs.
Figured top covers entire top.
Oil finish.
Wenge accent layer.

Mmmmm - All lovely stuff.....

I've only just come across this post, so thought I'd best add in mine....

Shuker Single Cut Custom 5:













English White Ash Body, Cooked Maple top, Maple and Wenge 5 piece laminate 35" scale neck with Graphite rods, EMG DC and CS pick ups and 18v Shuker 3 band EQ.

Not getting used as much as I'd like it to at the moment, but hopefully should be remedying that soon.

As for the construction, I think it's down to personal preference, and cost :-)

I've personally not noticed any real difference between through-neck and bolt ons (other than aesthetics - Some through-necks really are a work of art), and the neck is [u]very[/u] securely fixed to the body. Apparently the extended (or lack of) horn helps keep the neck fixed further up and helps achieve a lower action - not something I've really noticed as I'm not a massive fan of super low actions (a bit heavy handed on the technique front and I like to dig in a bit).

Gotcha

I love the aesthetic of the single cut, but I prefer a bolt on for the complete adjustability of it (i.e. shimming it if necessary, replace the neck easily if something went wrong). The two kind of seem irreconcilable to me. But that looks great.

The way I play means that even blocky heels ala Fender don't bother me, and I too cannot really tell the sonic difference between a bolt on and set neck and neck thru. So there are no pros for me having set neck or neck thru other than the look or perhaps the ability to achieve a thinner body.

However I'd imagine the ability to shim the neck on a [s]set neck[/s] [u][i]singlecut[/i][/u] is somewhat impaired due to the length of the bolt on area... oh well, I'll speak to Jon about it next weekend. Unfortunately my neck won't be ready til after the Bash it seems. Rubbish.

I didn't have this made for me, but I bought it from "new".



Zoot Chaser Prototype.
Quilted Maple (1/2" thick) over Swamp Ash.
Rosewood Fretboard.
PurpleHeart Accent layer between the Maple and Ash.
Maple Neck (Bolt-on)
Proprietary Bridge
Seymour Duncan Basslines MM HB Pickup
18v East E-Pro EQ with Bass, Treble, Bright, Full Passive Bypass, Series/Parallel switching, Passive tone control.

Sounds best on lighter gauge strings. Must get some DRs or Elixirs for it at some point.
I neglect it too much!

Sounds? Think "[i]Stingray[/i]" and then some, but that passive tone can really smooth it out if you need it.

Unfortunately I don't have a great cam but here goes

A 'van der End' JB, made in 1994 (so it's 14 years old for those who don't wanna do some maths)

I've yet to have the nut replaced, because the current one is a bit too wide (after 14 years of use that's not too bad though)

The core of the body is walnut, with a veneer of bolivar which has been dyed claret (which actually looks pinkish) separating it from the full facings of lacewood. Pink is my fiancee's favourite colour so it was great to incorporate that into the instrument. Electronics are passive and are just 1 custom Kent Armstrong humbucker, to 1 volume control. I have basses with active circuits, but I always leave the EQ flat anyway, so I didn't see the point in having any onboard tone shaping!! The bass has an XLR out in addition to the regular 1/4" as well as coil-tap button on the lower edge. Pull the volume pot and the purple LED's on the side of the neck light up.

Here's the ACG 9 string which I collected today:


Basic Specs:

9 strings
35" scale
Swamp ash body with mahogany top and wenge accent
Mahogany headstock facing with a wenge backplate
Maple/wenge neck with wenge transition plate
Bookmatched, acrylicised, spalted maple fingerboard
Hipshot hardware. piezo in bridge
ACG pickups and EQ-01 preamp
Serial/Parallel switching
Neck or Piezo switch
Low battery indicator


This is the result of many, many hours on Alan's (ACG) part and to him I extend my sincerest thanks and congratulations on producing such a fine instrument.


These aren't the greatest pics, but hopefully they will give an idea of how great this ERB is!!
