Looking for a decent double bass

you might want to mention your budget and location. I managed to get a nice one off gumtree for £500 incl setup costs. Would recommend asking your teacher to take a look at a bass you choose before you hand the money over, since I definitely didn't know what I was looking for.

i might be selling my cheap chinese solid top for what i paid here from a basschatter (£150) as i now have a new bass , just need to hang on to it for a little while as i may be having a bit more work done on the new one if things work out, its easy to play as it has a lowish string height, cheers, jez

Ok. Thanks guys but let me re-phrase:
I'll consider a solid wood (not plywood)
Roundback preferred (but not above a good flatback)
Maybe I should say from around the £2500 and up price range (so not just a cheapie...but not silly, snobbish money :-))

Or if you've seen one to consider, I'll appreciate a note pointing me in the direction>>>>>
Much thanks guys[/quote]

Interesting looking bass, but a few things I've spotted on the pics

Angle of neck to body seems quite steep
Odd looking endpin wire arrangement
Bridge is leaning/even curving somewhat - (a sign that it needs replacing?)
It may just be the camera angles, or are these things normal on a bass of this type?

Could it be that the bass is being sold by a general antique shop rather than a specialist shop? It probably needs some TLC/setting up. The tail wire looks like the old stuff they used to put on before the multistrand cable was used. I had some that looked like bent welding rod and it let go on me in the middle of a gig. Bridge is definitely askew; you can see its feet kicked up at the tailpiece end. Could be that its been restrung to sell, without much care being taken. That said, it looks a very interesting bass and in these hard times could go at a bargain price for what it is.
