To my ears, the differences are so slight that either could probably be made to sound like the other with some EQ tweaking, I reckon. As such, not sure which I preferred...

In fact, I might be going deaf but they sound pretty much identical to me!

+1

Some of my basses have these both sounds just tweaking the EQ, but the best sound for me is bass 2

to my ears bass 1 sounds very much like a jazz bass / super jazz

the fingerstyle clip reminds me of my sadowsky!

A poll would probably be helpful for seeing which one has most votes!

But my answer is Bass 2 both pickups was my favourite sound. However, for the solo'd pickups and the slap sound, Bass 1 won by a mile! Although I'd be content with Bass 2 both pickups if I had to have just one.

Bass 2 on finger... i think bass 1 is not "bridgy" enough for me... pickup must be a bit far from the bridge or a humbucker or something? The other one sounds nice to me ^^

OK - thanks so much for the input everyone! It's really helped.

There doesn't seem to be a clear 'winner' and most agree that both sound comparable.

My fav is Bass 1 - for me it sounds more solid and more snappy/instant with the slap stuff.

You won't believe this but Bass 1 is a £130 short scale Chinese built Richwood (see below)

Bass 2 is my beautiful '97 Warwick Streamer LX (currently for sale) which now sell for £1400 upwards!

Now to be fair, the Richwood has been modified with a Badass II, Dimarzio Pickups and an EMG 2- band eq. But still it seems unreal that the sound would be even close in quality to a bass costing 10 x as much!

You see I really love this Richwood and use it as my main bass, but something was niggling at me saying 'it can't really sound any good, can it?'. I mainly love the bass for it's short scale as my fingers are short.

In conclusion I'd say a lot of folk did warm to the more sophisticated sound of the Warwick, but the Richwood was percieved as a Jazz bass (that's the way I think of it) and a damn good one at that!

Just goes to show, you can spend thousands on a bass but it'll still be a lump of wood with some strings attached. You can't put a price on tone.

I used to sell Richwood Guitars & Basses and the one you are holding was a great bass even in standard form, they came in red with gold fittings too.

Great playing :)

Fantastic blind test. :)
Someone even said bass 1 was a super jazz.
It's no surprise to me that I chose the expensive one though. For my ears it has more bite and this split harmonic thing (I wish I knew the technical term) that you get with perfect pickup positioning that I love.
..... both pups, fingered would be my choice ....
How many forums do you get to say that on? :)

Bass #1 for me.
The clip with both pickups on had me undecided, but the bridge pickup alone convinced me of number #1. Slap tone of #1 settled it afterwards. Both sound great (and the playing is great!!! I enjoyed listening to that) but #1 is my favourite.
