BigBeatNut
I was round a friends using a Tech21 SansAmp Pre-Amp > Electro Harmonix 22 Caliber Power Amp > Trace Elliot 4x12, ... Definitely thinking about investing in an Electro Harmonix 22 Caliber Power Amp though. Pocket sized, fantastic if you need a small rig to take to practise or a small gig and don't want to lug your rack around.
For a 22 watt amp to be appropriate it would need to be a very quiet gig wouldn't it ? I know I've played small venues with a 90-watt amp (GK MB150) and sometimes struggled a bit, and I once played a blues jam that povided a 50-watt amp and swore never again. I know speaker efficiency has to be taken into account, but still, I'd have thought that 22 watts was just not up to the job of anything including a drummer ... might work with acoustic guitars, I guess ?
You know, I would have thought exactly the same thing. It was amazing how loud it was though, I wasn't expecting it at all. We didn't even push it over half way. True if you were playing in a full band situation it probably wouldn't be powerful enough, I was thinking alone the lines of acoustics. Not bad for £60ish though! leftybassman392
My current amp of choice: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/PJB_Flightcase.html Not this particular one obviously, but mine is identical (couldn't be ar**d to take a photo and upload it to Photobucket is all). A full 13" tall and a meaty 24lb in weight. Never gigged as I'm currently 'between bands' since my back injury, but I used it to rehearse with a modern jazz band with two guitars, sax and drums, and never had any trouble being heard. Records beautifully too. To hear it, follow this link: http://www.myspace.com/consortiumsessionplayers and have a listen to a couple of the audio-only tracks (I recommend either 'Wing & a Prayer' or 'Drop & Roll'). Sei Original, DI from the amp straight into the desk - no effects, no edits, very little mixing (just to balance levels). Please be kind - it was a very early rehearsal ( I was playing the songs for the second or third time ever IIRC). In case you're interested, the video is taken from a live gig using the TC RH450/RS210 rig I had at the time (still pretty small but a bit big for this thread I suspect) - recorded on a cheapie little DVR I believe (hence the, er, basic sound quality). BigBeatNut
Hmmm interesting. I'd like to know if it lives up to this:
Whether sitting, standing, close or far field; the sound is the same.
In a live setting.
leftybassman392
Hmmm interesting. I'd like to know if it lives up to this: In a live setting.
Actually I can vouch for the 'sitting or standing' bit - two of the four speakers fire upwards, and so the answer is 'yes' (as in 'yes I can confirm that it does sound the same sitting or standing'). As for the 'near or far' bit, I'll let you know when I've done one, but don't hold your breath. It's louder than you'd think, but against a full kit and a couple of guitarists at full tilt..... not to mention the chattering masses? I've met several people who've actually spoken to Phil Jones (one of whom actually worked for him), and apparently he's a complete d*** with a personality somewhere between autistic and psychopathic. He does make nice amps though, even if his design philosophy isn't to everybody's taste (which, clearly, it isn't). obbm
I've just finished my MiniRig Mk2. It was gigged for the first time last weekend and worked fine with a pair of Aguilar SL112s. The rack case was made to my specification by Flightcase warehouse and I can't praise them enough. They shaved days off their quoted delivery so I could have it in time for my gig and it was dimensionally perfect. The spacing of the rack strip was such that I could fix several rack trays which came from a Gator wireless mic case. The Boss Tuner and dbx compressor are screwed to these This mean't that the overall width was just larger than the GK Fusion Amp which is secured from underneath by bolts into the feet holes. Note the extra hole in the side for the GK cooling fan. There is still nothing in the top 1U tray so I've been wondering about fitting a small UV light.
