Stance Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 OK-just give me a couple of days as I´m on the road. Quote
mart3442 Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) Thought I'd revitalise the thread with this little beauty. 1978 all original except for the preamp which has been changed for a 1982/3 model by a previous owner. oli@bass Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013
And then there's this, 1980. Bought from a BCer a little while ago now, it's a proper 'Ray. Slim neck, low action, punchy sound and in excellent nick. Been no.1 bass on and off, as it is now. Bought as some recording found the sound of my long time singular Jaydee to be wanting in body. It has never disappointed.
That's nice! A true classic! Quote
oli@bass Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 (edited)
Im litterally sitting looking at the John East site now trying to decide if I should put a 2 or 3 EQ preamp in this Classic5? My heart says 2EQ my head says 3EQ for the getting in the mix as 4 strings states
With the John East preamps, the 3EQ is actually a 2EQ with a semi-parametric mid section inserted after the 2EQ preamp. It's like going with a 2EQ bass directly into a mixing console and use the parametric mids on the console. It's brilliant. I installed one in my 1986 Sabre where the original preamp was fried. Overall the 3EQ John East preamp very nicely catches the MM 2EQ characteristics but with useful additions of a very nice sounding bright switch and the semi-parametric mid control. And with the stacked knob design it fits easily into a original 2 EQ MM bass. Edited July 17, 2013 by oli@bass Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted July 20, 2013 Author Posted July 20, 2013 Too late, the 2 EQ is in now I just fancied keeping it sort of normal and I have my other rays for three band fun. Still tinkering at the moment but I will update once I get a better idea of it. Quote
4 Strings Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013
That's nice! A true classic!
Thanks, its going through a busy time, its slabness was out gigging again in the sun. Oh the neck.... Quote
cybertect Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) As I'm new here, here's my '79 Sabre, which I've owned since 1994. I was after a 'Ray, but they were slightly out of my price range; I found this for sale at £800 in a shop on Denmark Street and fell in love. The salesman said they'd bought it from the bass playing brother of a fairly well known British jazz guitarist, but much to my embarrassment I've forgotten who it was. It's certainly not led a sheltered life, but it plays fine. I've not really felt the need to get a Stingray since Edited July 27, 2013 by cybertect Quote
Stance Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Definitely a player´s bass! BTW, I´ve found a pic of Ricky James with a Stingray! Thought the guy was a Rick guy... Guess he had good taste lol Got to scan that pic and put it here! Quote

Kees_SoS Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 (edited) I own a '79 factory fretless Sabre in black. Lovely instrument, but not quite what I need at the moment, so I've put it up for sale: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/220610-music-man-sabre/page__p__2280806__hl__sabre__fromsearch__1#entry2280806 Edited December 18, 2013 by Kees_SoS Quote

Highfox Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Some real beauties in here Forgot I hadn't added mine. MM-82 Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted July 9, 2014 Author Posted July 9, 2014 Thats awesome, basically my Classic5 was as close to that as I could get but with a B string! I'm going to have to get myself a fiver one of these days. Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted July 9, 2014 Author Posted July 9, 2014 I still dont think they sound as good as a real pre eb, if Leo had made a handful of prototype 5 string versions id have to own one! This is as close as it gets and im a total convert to fives now although I switch to db for a quarter of my gigs so after struggling with 4 and fives I can switch my db brain on when playing a 4 string, I use a Warwick thumb bo at practice sometimes, that said I grab a Ray5 as soon as there is a key change or drop tuning (sometimes both!) The classics are very nice basses in 4 or 5 string, top quality fit and finish. Quote

Stance Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Here´s mine 83 Trans Red with Ebony Fretboard (also notice the extra dot) -the battery compartment is also flushed - I guess it´s the correct term) Came with the original case - I bought it like this - the original owner was a famous Portuguese luthier, so that´s why the bass has these small chages - at least he kept the color The other one I got is the black one that´s on my Avatar Quote
