I wind the e string end in as much as possible as to use it as a thumb rest then put the g end slightly raised towards the strings in comparison and fine tune the balance across all the strings in a band setting,I have taken a bass with a legendary weak g to actually having to much output compared to the lower strings and then back to balanced. Get the e end set in a deep as possible first ime :)

sorry, when you mean "wind the E string end", are you talking about the pickup height? ( I´m still trying to get a grip on all the expressions you use :)

Had a good look tonight - all pick up springs are in place and the thread is there as the screw goes in perfectly without the pick up and does not pull out which was my worry. Looks like superglue is the only option!
[/quote]

Are the springs still providing some upwards pressure on the machine screws? If not then the springs might want stretching out a bit, the pickup should be fighting against the screw in the same way jazz basses etc have a thin spring around each screw. If it still does it just a dab of glue will be fine as it has very little tensile strength and just splits away from the thread should you need to remove the screw at some point, just comes away like a moulding of the thread then do the same again next time. You can buy proper thread lock but it's messy IMO :)

This is exactly it.

It's usual to put the pups as close to the strings as possible for maximum output but, for some reason on MMs - maybe the very strong magnets - too close reduces output. Many, in trying to get a better output from the 'G' quite reasonably wind the 'G' end up closer to the strings, but closer than the peak distance and so actually make matters worse. (The next step is then to form an opinion and give the basses a reputation for a weak 'G'!)

Trial and error is the only way but knowing that a healthy gap between the string and magnet is required helps.

Jeez thats close to the one I just traded to Old Horse Murphy! Mine had a white plate from new and the serial was something like B023030.

As the starter of this thread but now not owning a pre EB I feel quite sad :(

Hi Pete, that is close... but, :( also.
it will turn up one day

Feel like buying one? :-)

I´m still thinking whether I should put my 1988 for sale

Talking of 'Oomph' here's a pic of my Sabre, bought from a jazz trumpet player from Germany through the very helpful paullkeeves on this forum. Was apparently originally bought by a german upright jazz bass player, presumably as a fretless, hence the ebony fret board and dots on the top of the neck lining with the frets, and then had frets installed, hence the frets(!) and addition of dots (which also explains the last dot).

It's an early one the serial no. is C002838

It's a very powerful sound, plays very well and is made from the nicest pieces of wood.

Haha, I've just noticed its got the Sabre E-string-out-the-saddle syndrome! I'd just put flats back on it and not played it yet, looks like I'll need to redo the pic!

And then there's this, 1980. Bought from a BCer a little while ago now, it's a proper 'Ray. Slim neck, low action, punchy sound and in excellent nick. Been no.1 bass on and off, as it is now. Bought as some recording found the sound of my long time singular Jaydee to be wanting in body. It has never disappointed.

Not an easy choice. I've just come back from rehearsing with it, it's a killer sound. I suppose one of the things is the 2 eq stands out in the mix without help. BUT, you don't get that little boost should you need it.

If the East preamp fits with push connectors instead of soldering, I wonder if John would let you try one for a couple of weeks.

I dearly love this bass!

Ordered a two band, I need that classic two band tone in my life,I just wish musicman had made a five string in the 70's

You won't go wrong with either.

I'll have the same choice to make myself soon, I'm having a custom made and will use one of John's MM style preamps.

Let me know how you get on!
