Obvious choice would be a set of flatwounds - as for the manufacturer, that's your choice, most of the main producers have flatwounds available... Machines
Flatwounds all the way - D'Addario Chromes are my personal recommendation.
BassBod
Thomastik flatwounds - only made in one (odd) gauge and may require some set to work well (they're a bit more flexible than most) but sound wonderful - warm and clear. They sound like that for years too....just as well 'cause they are expensive. BB Edited June 6, 2007 by BassBod

Jean-Luc Pickguard
+1 on the thomastik jazz flats - I won't use anything else. Also I'm sure they get better with age.

davidmark
Hi, excellent flatwound strings for a deep thumpy sound are Rotosound's Tru Bass strings , they are wrapped in a nylon coating and sound awesome, paul mccartney from the beatles used them on abbey road, best flatwounds out there
DanOwens
+1 on the Roto TruBass strings; especially if you want an 'upright' type of tone. DaN
The Burpster
+1 for D'addario Chromes BEAUTIFUL, lush, warm tone..... IMO ideal for Jazz and Blues..... PS-- if you want to hear Roto's in their element listen to anything by Herbie Flowers thats all he uses! bassbluestew
+1 on the TI Jazz Flats.............luvverly, luvverly strings - but a tad expensive. Buit as I always says, you gets what you pays for. AFAIK Jamerson was a La Bella man on his P bass. And for that reason, and ONLY that reason I'm going to buy some when the TI's get tired. Soppy old git that I am. What does Babbit use ?? richy316
Some seriously dirty ones!! old used strings i think it was Bernard Edwards from Chic that never changed the strings on his Musicman and he got that deep deep sound with no top end at all.
