Do y'all (see, I *can* do country!!!) think I'd get away with a Squier or would it make me the red-headed stepchild?

Just trying to remain open to all options at the minute.

Also trying to work out whether I'd get away with a Zenith. Now there's a guitar I'd be happy to own regardless what happens to this project in the future.

Hmmm.... interesting.

I'd never live it down if I bought a Tele... after the grief I gave my mate for buying a Telecaster. But looking at it... it's alright innit!?!

When I first got my Tele, I was a bit put off by what my then band members were saying about it.

However , I love it . I also think that the sound varies so much from flatwounds or Roundwounds. That 'thud' sounds like no other.

F**k looks, the new "Rockabilly" wave is more interested in cherry print, knuckledusters and crap bowling shirts with badly printed flamejobs, and has NOTHING to do with real thing, so you will never win unless you have covered your instrument in 10,000 rhinestones and the obligatory dice knobs. They have done nothing but damage and cheapen the scene, same goes for Psychobilly, where theres 100x more double-bass snobbery.
51 RI P-bass will sound the best, and looks trad enough without snobs criticising you for having a "normal" off the peg P-bass.

Even with the neck repair a seriously cool vintage bass for not too much dosh, with all the low end you could want

+1 for P-bass.

However! - I play in a country band, and usually use my Danelectro Longhorn. Despite the shorter scale (which you may not get on with?),
it sounds ace - v.deep thumping tone yet enough mids to sit well in the mix. Also looks funky as hell! The current Chinese made ones
come in a cool brownburst kinda finish which suits the genre too. Always have people come and ask me what it is during a gig.
And they're cheap and cheerful!

I play in a Folk/Country/Americana type band thing & play my Ibby Soundgear which is a similar shape to your Schecter.

I've been looking at an Esh similar to yours tho.
