Ah, that kind of "double bass", and that kind of "pedal".

A double bass pedal is like a normal bass drum pedal, yet has a second pedal attached by a long arm, thus allowing a drummer to use one bass drum in place of two.

They're used a lot by metal drummers who don't want to have to cart two bass drums around.

They are a useful tool yet have a tendency to be used by teenage metal drummers who hammer constantly throughout every song with no dynamic control or fluctuation. Just constant beating.

Our drummer uses one, and he's nearly 60. Must be young at heart.
