BassBod
I've never done that exact comparison, but I have changed a dead Fender 73 for a DM whatever its called (the one they've made for ever..). Sounded very similar but with a bit more output and more "edge". I liked it. BB
Hit&Run
I've got some dimarzio model J (DP123) pups in my squier 70s VMJ and they're sweet. Series & parallel wiring/switching is an option I took advantage of (why not?), and Dimarzios can be had for very reasonable prices from the USA. I think Bass Player did a shoot-out of jazz bass pups a while back. Both the dimarzio sets faired well I seem to remember.
gafbass02
Thanks guys, im now thinking about barts if they work with the audere, as the exposed pole pieces kinda bug me, yet only on this bass?!?!?

warwickhunt
'When a wur a lad' (best flat cap and whippet tone used) back in the late 70's early 80's, everyone was modding their Fenders with DMs. Wind the clock forward 20-30 years and the view from the bar was, that the stock original pups were tonally better/mellower/growlier/insert your choice of adjective... are we now back to DMs already? If you do swap them out, keep them in a box somewhere! Edited February 11, 2008 by warwickhunt

BassBod
In my (limited) experience of Barts, expect a fairly low output (assuming passive) and a pretty "dark" tone? I like the Bart sound, but I found a PJ set I tried were too lacking in definition and output for me. I also had a MM Bart, and that was totally different.....a real keeper. gafbass02
yeah im already unsure! i decided to stick a bart mm style in there and pay to get it routed in, which was my original plan!, now i just need to find a neck pup on its own from somewhere!!!
