Linus27
Just wondering what the difference is between a 60's Jazz bass and a 70's Jazz bass. Is there any difference in neck radius/profile, body shape and profile, pickup and bridge placement, tuners, pickups used and the differences in tone? I see Fender do various 60's Re-Issue's and 70's Re-Issue's and so I was wondering what the differences would be. Thanks.
Lozz196
The main thing - in my view - is that the bridge pickup is nearer to the bridge, so when either soloed, or using both pickups, it has a brighter twang to the sound.
dave_bass5
Im no expert but i do know the bridge pup was moved back a bit in the 70s. I believe it was so it would fit completely under the bridge cover but im not sure thats the whole truth.
Hobbayne
70,s also have that nice binding on the edge of the neck with those pearl block inlays instead of dot markers.

markorbit
The earlier Jazz basses would also have had vintage frets which are thinner. The stack knob pre-62/63 Jazzes allow for independent control of tone for each pickup as opposed to a shared pot. Binding and blocks were introduced around 1965/66. The main difference as already has been pointed out is pickup placement for the bridge pickup - the 70s Jazz has more wirey-growl whilst the 60s is slightly rounder and warmer. wateroftyne
The g-string bridge screw would be longer than the others in 70-72, as well.
bigjohn
Not really a lot in it but I think My 60s reissue has a slightly deeper neck profile than 70s reissues I've played. Also has a bound neck - but with dots not blocks. And vintage frets.
