Stroopy121
Anyone have one? I'm GASsing pretty badly for one (1988). I've got an 1989/1990 Fender Power Jazz (porn to come when the mood takes me) and I remember being absolutely gutted when I saw it was so close to being a 'birth year bass' but wasn't. Other than that I own a 2000(ish) Mexican Jazz which is my workhorse so I'm thinking I'll try to track down a birth year P-Bass... but then again if I were to invest in an old P-bass I'd probably go whole hog and look for one that's much older, meaning I'd take an '88 damn-near-anything-as-long-as-it-plays-well! Anyway, anyone out there own a birth-year bass (pictures preferred, naturally) and if so, do you feel a particular attachment to it sentimentally? Or is it more a 'grass is greener' affair and once you own one it loses it's magic? xx
Lozz196
I don`t, but there was a thread on here by Clarky, who was searching for one - and got it. There`s currently a 65 Precision for sale on here which would suit me very well, but I just don`t have the required £3500 for it. So, my answer would be, get one whilst they`re not too expensive - an 88 won`t be too much at present, and you`ll always be able to sell it for what you paid for it (or more, if you have it for a good few years). Machines
Yeah, I want something from 1983 - but what was actually good back then ? It certainly isn't Fenders.
Truckstop
Yeah likewise. I'm 1986 and I'd love a Fender, but I don't really see the point! I might look for a BC Rich or an Ibanez/Yamaha somethingorother when I can be bothered to scour eBay. Truckstop

ThomBassmonkey
I'm too picky with basses without adding year of manufacture into the process. I can only really think of Wal that would fit the bill and since I play 5ers, it'd be incredibly expensive just for a YOB bass. Maybe a Ray 5, but I was born 84, so if I was going to buy a Ray from that era, I'd probably be better off just buying a new one.
xgsjx
I've thought about getting a birth year bass many times, but there's not much that I fancy from '71. Not even the Mrs is that old! Other than an over priced Fender Ricky or Vox, there's not much choice.
simon1964
My 64 Precision's neck is actually stamped "5 Nov 64" - my actual birthday! Pics in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...hl=64+precision "5" in the neck stamp is actually the model number rather than date, but still pretty cool! These days I only play 5-string basses so even if there was something available that I liked it wouldn't actually get used. I'd probably settle for 1960 Burns Sonic (my first bass was a later model Sonic), provided that there was some way of authenticating the date since none of the 1960 ones have serial numbers. burray
Not that I've got any money to buy anything at the moment, but I've struggled to find a decent choice of basses for 1984. I think they skipped a year.

Trouble is they get marketed as "last years at Fullerton" these days, with a premium attached.
thisnameistaken
Did Jazzes have blocks in 1974? If so I might be interested, can't say I've thought about it before though.
Paultrader
Trouble is, the older you are, the more it would cost. Anyone got a '55 Precision for about £300?

Cosmo Valdemar
I was after a Rickenbacker for ages, saw a 1981 4001 and took it as 'a sign'. Bought it, turned out it was a stunningly mediocre bass in all aspects other than appearance, so I sold it shortly after. There are dozens of old basses I would love, but it would only be a novelty extra if they were from 1981.
