What kind of pedal is he using to make his bass sound like a guitar?

Anyone know what kind of effect the 2nd Bass player is using here for the solo right at the end of the tune? I want that pedal!

Never mind the bass, how about that sax solo! Lifts the whole thing, what a rush.

The main reason it sounds like a guitar is because he's playing very high up the neck, add some distortion and that's about it... as far as I can tell on my laptop.

A guitar in other words.....

Not quite. It occupies the same frequency range but in every other way it's a 'bass'.

Surely it's the frequency range that determines if an instrument is in the bass register or not, rather than scale length or number of strings?

So a baritone guitar would have a lower range than a piccolo bass but would be classed as a guitar & a piccolo bass would be a bass even though it's in a higher register?

I have no idea why & to be honest I'm not sure I really care. :)

If you're into this kind of thing, check out Brian Bromberg's studio album "You know that feeling" Especially the track "Joe Cool"

Despite what you'll be hearing on it, there are no guitars at all on the recording. Absolutely brilliant.

You could probably get somewhere near this sound using a pitch-shifting pedal such as a digitech whammy. The V-Bass nails it, no problem, but it's a lot of effort for not a lot of reward!

A piccolo bass is strung with bass strings (piccolo sets are thinner than a standard set, but allot thicker than guitar strings), this gives the instrument the tonal qualities of a bass which is distinguishable from a guitar.

Another way of looking at it - The flugelhorn is in the same register as the trumpet and is fingered the same way, but is distinguishable from the trumpet by its tonal qualities.

But I'd also concede that if a guitar luthier had conceived a 4 string 30-34 inch scale baritone guitar using larger gauge strings, we may well be calling it something different again.
