bubinga5
Possibly the best disco funk soul 70,s band ever..who can tell..?? i was working in a crap booze shop when i was 19, and i had EWAF playing on the tape that my sister lent me.. this first tune was playing..these ladies came in..they were possibly late 30's, and were dancing around... they really were dancing!!..i really didnt realise the power of this band.. all of my friends were listening to dance or hip hop at another place and time.. i was coming out of that and remember what my mum was listening to.. i was so hooked... i think this music is so amazing.. i will listen to it until the day i die.. this was the tune that i had on... always makes me smile...and reminds me of my departed mum.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNiOmzK3z0c everything about this track is very cool.. brass section, vocals..his bass playing is smokin... when this track kicks in at 130 its so wonderful until the end..!! this is the standard.. Verdines bass playing at 1.30 onwards is fantastic..it gets better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db4w8TY6mpc She gave me this album and there is a killer Masters at Work track on it.... its worth waiting for,. Paultrader
I didn't listen to this music much at the time, but have since gone on to really appreciate it, and realise just how amazing the musicianship is - magic! I don't know whether this is as cool, but I've always adored Chic too. Here's a favourite clip of mine. What wouldn't I give to stand between those two gorgeous ladies playing that fantastic riff! JTUK
Have to say I was not at all knocked out by Verdine and Fred White when I saw them at Wembley. I know Fred was used as a session drummer a bit for that straight 4 on the floor thing which he did well, but I have a suspsicion that Verdine couldn't even play bass on some tracks...dunno where I got that from. But, that aside, their accredited EWF recorded work is right up there.
Pete Academy
The greatest and most innovative funk/soul band ever IMO.
BassBunny
Have seen them 3 or 4 times, including the latest incarnation that is really just Earth. They are members of the Magic Circle and their stage act was always sensational.
Raslee
Still got my EW&F first album, funky as funk. Bad tune is an all time favorite. BottomE
Yeah - they were funky. I loved Boogie Wonderland when it came out - massive sound. I love playing Shining Star.

You can't knock their recordings though.

bubinga5
i will add i remember seeing a EWAF show on Youtube and hated the big show... the music is much better on its own.. you dont need light shows for this music..
JTUK
Yeah, there has been talk for years that Verdine doesn't play everything live. Must have been around 1977 and Marcus M was on it as an 18 yr old..??? and played a slap line ..as he does. Verdine's featured track was a rather mundane offering and I recall thinking that only made the final cut for his name as EWF were huge at the time. IIRC, they even had a another bass player play a line underneath it. Anyway, not wanting to go over old ground as this sentiment has been aired before and not wanting to detract from the thread..too much. spongebob
+1 on EW&F. Great albums band as well....the 'big' singles get a lot of cred (rightfully so), but they have produced some cracking long players IMHO.
Pete Academy
Their 'That's The Way Of The World' album, along with the AWB's 'White' album, shaped my bass upbringing. I played those albums to death. Verdine's part on 'Shining Star' is probably one of the most innovative ever. However, seeing some videos of EWF in concert, I'm not sure Verdine is actually playing the parts. In fact, there is so much post-production that I'm put off, and can't bear to go and watch them live these days,. There is a DVD where they're playing a TV gig and the viewers are phoning through requests (something like EWF By Request). It's extremely overdubbed.
