bobbass4k Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Not sure to be honest, I don't consider any of the stuff I can play hard because I can play it.... I spose this requires a bit of thought: The riff at 3:05 is a bugger, that extra 5/8 bar trips me up occasionally. Quote
Hobbayne Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Fontella Bass - Rescue Me. Not a difficult bassline by any stretch of the imigination, until our singer suddenly anounced she was going to change the key to Eb Quote
goblin Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Boogie Wonderland and Blame it on the Boogie in silly keys. I'm playing in the band for a show and we're all cursing the scores. Would have probably been easier if I wasn't playing it at sight and fretless. Pretty much nailed it and the band got an applause from the cast, which is a rare occasion Quote
Ross Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Spirit of radio - Rush. Just getting the timing of that bit at the start was a huge pain, plus it was back when I was just getting back into playing after a lengthy break and my fingers weren't nearly as fast or accurate as they are now. Quote
Pete Academy Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 'Sex Machine' is simple but really get right. A lot of bass parts are easy but the feel is difficult. 'Brick House', 'Somebody Else's Guy', anything by Chic, 'Rhythm Stick', 'Wicki Wacki' and 'Bus Stop' by the Fatback Band. Quote
clauster Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Express Yourself - Chrales Wright (smpled by NWA etc). not difficult but in my hands keeps segueing into I'll take you there - Staple Singers Quote
JTUK Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I recall the slap part in 5-G ( J Berlin) being a pig at the time. And he says he can't slap !!!!!!!!! Anything the guy does is very very clean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47aYmY0QLLc Quote

Have horrible pigs for exams coming up, recovery proceedings and bankcruptcy for one, crime, deviance and social control for another, law of auditions (YAY! Wait, it's the financial reporting sort of auditioning) and law of securities and debt contracts, so realistically I'll start on Donna Lee on May the 20th, after my last exam this spring. Gimme 2 weeks to sort it out? I got full-time office work to muddle through by then. Quote

I think his fingerstyle technique is pretty much flawless. Still, I prefer Bona, Pastorius, Pohjola or Miller any day of the week. Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 The hardest stuff I find is Oasis, Cold Play and Snow Patrol and that sort of stuff I just switch off and get lost, I dont know how those guy do weeks of touring night after night. I dont mind the odd steady thumper but come on man just a little riff here and there anything! (See Kings of Leon for how that stuff should be done IMO) Quote
goblin Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I'm noted for once turning Molly's Chambers into a massive bass solo. Needless to say, the rest of the band weren't too impressed but the other band's bassist was pissing himself as it was in their set too Quote
paul_5 Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I once learnt 'Teentown' and 'Portrait of Tracy' and they were pretty tough nuts to crack. Not done them in a while, I reckon I'll have to dig them out again fairly soon. Quote
Deep Thought Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 The full-length version of Ram Jam's 'Black Betty' is a sod to play. Thankfully we only do the shortened version. Quote

I do know what you mean though, the monotony of some of the lines will make you switch off if you're not totally on the ball! Quote
xgsjx Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 (edited) Probably the hardest bassline I ever actually tried to get all the way thru is Shy Boy by Talas. I got the most of it with some of the fills me not even coming close to, but I did manage to nail the solo from 2:11! After learning it I never managed to find a band that wanted to cover it (even as a more simplified version), but it taught me to use chords, harmonics & how to tap. I'm not sure what I would say was the hardest I have learnt, Probably something by Dave Barron in my sig (have a click and listen, Faded Memory maybe) which I have learnt as part of his live band. Chris2112 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 The toughest stuff for me was probably working on some lines from "tears in Heaven" by Jeff Berlin. Rock hard! Quote
GarethFlatlands Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Continuing the Oceansize theme, I auditioned for them when their old bassist left and had to learn 'Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs', 'Charm Offensive' and 'Homage to A Shame.' The first 2 were pretty straightforward apart from a few oddly timed sections but 'Homage to A Shame' was a killer to learn. Lots of off-time bit and a ton of separate sections to get to grips with. My plan of impressing them and learning a couple more tracks was well and truly scuppered after that one took up all the time I had available. Still fluffed it during the audition too. Quote
bassbluestew Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 She Makes My Day - Robert Palmer Took a while to get it. Main issue was that I was hearing it wrong, I thought the bass lines was changing and couldn't work out what it was doing until I realised the bass note was actually staying the same and everything else was changing. Once I got my ears round that it was okdoky !! Was really pissed that the rest of the band didn't put in the same effort. S Quote
Randy_Marsh Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Buck Rogers by Feeder. Ridiculously complicated and intricate bass line, took me months Quote

And i've never found a band willing to cover it We should do it with two basses The bit under the solo is the hardest part for me, one of my favourite songs to play. So much fun! Quote
bassfunk Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Mine has to be the middle bit bit to Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. It was the first 'complicated' line I had to learn and I play it with the covers band I'm in now. If the drummer starts the song off too fast I know I'm in trouble when I get to that bit!
