bassjamm Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 (edited) Hi guys, Just wondered what D'addario string sets you all use...i use the nikel 45's 5 string sets, but wondered what else you all use? Also, where you've found them to be cheapest...i use stringsdirect! J Edited February 11, 2008 by bassjamm Quote
Pedro1020 Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 I use D'Addario XL ProSteels 35 to 95's, they are pretty nice. I've depended on D'addario & Rotosound, plus (on the off chance) some Elites.. Sure they're little strings (gauge wise) But I love the sound! plus it helps for jazz scales  I've never tried their nickels, though I'll give them a chance someday Pedro Quote
BigRedX Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I've never got on with D'addario bass strings. They're my first choice for all my guitars, but the bass strings I've tried - steel, nickel and half rounds just don't do it for me. Quote
foal30 Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I use EPS160's (105E) on my Jazz and Chromes, again with a 105E on my fretless and P Bass. the Chromes are quite lovely, not cheap but smooth goodness. Quote
ped Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I find their nickel and steel strings a little 'rough' - the last few basses I have bought have come with them on and I always whip them right off! Quote
Machines Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I like them - have got some chromes (50-105) on my Jazz at the moment and usually put XLs (45-105) on the StingRay. I used to use Prosteels all the time but did find them quite coarse on the fingers plus they seemed to not have the same life that the XLs do. Quote
mr pablo Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I had the half-rounds (55-110) on my P bass for the last while and only took them off to give some DR high beams a try, I realy liked them and will definately use them again in the future Quote
bassjamm Posted February 12, 2008 Author Posted February 12, 2008 What about pricings and where you get them from then guys...? Quote
mr pablo Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 Last time I got mine I got em from stringsdirect, I have seen them fairly cheap knocking around on ebay here and i the US too Quote
Hit&Run Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I've bought mine in the past from this US ebay shop. The prices are good. Quote
Machines Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 http://www.stringbusters.com are cheapest for me. Quote
warwickhunt Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Just as an aside... I have a few sets of Warwick EMP strings if anyone wants to try them; swap for similar quality nickels (obviously new, not used, no matter how little). I'm just not a steels kind of guy! Quote
flip Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 EXL165's for me, I occasionally get a pack of pro-steels, but they're lacking a bit of mid punch compared to the nickels. I've tried Ernie Ball hybrids, DR lo riders & hi beams, GHS, LaBella, Rotosound Steels and Elites over the years but I keep coming back to D'Addarios. Although I've just put a set of Dean Markley Blue Nickels on my Lakland that I picked up in San Francisco for $17, they seem really good too thus far. Quote
Jase Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 EPS 160 Regular Pro Steels 50-105 Super Bright on my fretted jazz. http://www.stringbusters.com/ Quote
Quatschmacher Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 (edited) I'd check out this ebay shop for cheap strings. The selection isn't huge but the prices are great. There are great prices here too, depending on what you're looking for. john_the_bass Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 have a set of d'addario half rounds (ENR71?) on my USA Precision - 45-100. I really like them, feel nice and give a sort of somewhere between flats and rounds sound. Quote
bass_ferret Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Used the halfs once - did not like them but it was so long ago cant remember why. Quote

Tried Rotos and ended up hating them. My low B is just a thunder with the EXL's. I promised some time ago not to buy anything else. Quote
