niceguyhomer Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Swiped off my tutor, It's Mexican but with a Wizard Thumper, new pots, a set of TI flats it sounds better than any P I've owned (4). A new pickguard and bridge cover were added for effect and I'm pretty well pleased with the end result. Suffice to say, it'll get many outings methinks. Quote
lukeward2004 Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Really classy Alan, very workmanlike yet it smacks of "serious business" - very cool! Quote
David Nimrod Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Beautiful... I've always thought a bridge cover really finishes off a 'P' Quote
silverfoxnik Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Great pictures again Homer! The Bass looks the business too Quote
Soulfinger Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Tasty! Nothing beats a P for soul stuff. Did you get to hear the bass before the mods? I´m wondering how much difference better electronics can make in a MIM bass. Quote
mikeh Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 You got the thumper sorted then? I've played this and it is a stunning P. Sounded HUGE. I think when I get my next P, I'll be sticking a Thumper in it. Quote

But then the Thumper went in and wow - what a difference. Louder, punchier and brighter with a real 'openness' to the sound. I would recommend this pup for every P bass and the guy at Wizard is a pleasure to deal with. [quote name='mikeh' post='141794' date='Feb 17 2008, 08:53 AM']You got the thumper sorted then? Im really pleased with it now except I'll have to take the flats off if I want to gig with it 'cos the others don't like the sound. Sheesh Quote

What´s their problem? Too much thump and not enough highs? You could always try a set of D´Addario Chromes for a brighter sound. Quote
niceguyhomer Posted February 17, 2008 Author Posted February 17, 2008 In any other soul band they'd be fine but I'm responsible for a lot of the melody as well as the low end in our four piece band so I need a more articulate, brighter sound that I can't quite get with flats. Quote
cetera Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 VERY nice! Especially with the bridge cover... Aren't the 'Thumpers' more mid-rangey/brighter than normal P pickups? I thought for a more trad soul sound/flats you'd want the Wizard 'Trad' pickups? Quote

lukeward2004 Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 So does this mean you're sticking with the Precision/Jazz combo now Al? Have you still got those lovely Lakkies? Im so out of touch i need a gear update! Quote
niceguyhomer Posted February 18, 2008 Author Posted February 18, 2008 Hi Luke, at the moment I have this P, my Lakland Darryl Jones and a Bongo 5HS. The DJ is my main gigging bass - it hits the spot and looks cool too - even on an old ugly fat tw*t like me. Quote
GreeneKing Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 That's a very nice looking P you have there Alan. A Thumper arrived for me today for my new 'project'. Peter Quote

GreeneKing Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 The Thumper won't be passive but going through one of Alan's (ACG) new pre amps with a low pass filter and a treble boost. I think it may be the 1st of it's type i.e. P bass single pickup. So a bit of an experiment really. We'll see how it goes. Quote
Rayman Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Nice Al, very nice. Have you tried Thomastik flats? Nice bright click to them, not at all woolly like some flats I've tried, they were magic on that Lakland JO4 I had from Mike. Can you believe I'm on the brink of buying another Marcus Jazz? After selling the one I had from you, and regretting it about 5 minutes later. If I don't get it, a Lakland DJ4 might be next on the hitlist, haven't decided yet. Quote

They're a funny bunch - I'm trading my Epi 212 cab for two Bergantino 112s today and they're up in arms about it. After all, Berg cabs are crap aren't they Quote
Dr.Dave Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 [quote name='David Nimrod' post='141683' date='Feb 16 2008, 07:50 PM']Beautiful... Can't even get the old one off never mind the new one on. None of which matters in this thread though which is about Alan's Precision. Looks well cool to me. Simple, clean lines , a kick too from the Wiz pickup I should think. Been wondering how they would compare to the Dunc QP on mine which I always think is a bit over aggressive. Quote
spree Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 is this going to the NW bash? Looks lubberly and I'd love to hear the Thumper up against my P with fralins Quote
niceguyhomer Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 Sure thing spree, it'll be there Quote
GreeneKing Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 I'm bringing my Lakky BG with Villex pups and tone control so I'll be interested for a comparison too. Should be fun Peter Quote

zapp Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I'm not usually a P Bass fan but I really like the black body tort combination. Lovely looking Bass Quote
