Clarky
I have tried a couple of single piezo pickups on my DB, the Schatten RB1 and TM, and - although they both come highly recommended as loud, low-feedback, good quality pickups - they just don't work as well as a good old Shadow 950 on my particular bass. I guess it must be something to do with the nature of my bass (ply sides/back, carved front), the bridge (adjustable) and the wing slots on it. So I am moving them on The Schatten is literally less than one day old. I paid £102 plus £5 post for it from the importers, Sandarac http://www.sandarac.co.uk/schatten-design-bass-pickups.php, and got it in the post this morning. I will move it on for £90 posted, saving you £17 (c.15%) for the sake of one hour's use only. Happy Jack
That Taco Man looks like it would be a good fit with the DB I bought today - but I've only just gone & won a Fishman BP100 on t'Bay an hour ago! Are you in a position to offer a comparison? If the TM is definitely a better pickup, then I'll take it. I can always eBay the Fishman myself ... they seem to sell fairly quickly. (Going out for the evening now.)

(Going out for the evening now.)
Hey Jack, I've never tried a Fishman BP100 so I'm really not in a position to compare. One thing I have discovered in my DB 'journey' (sorry, very Pop Idol, promise I won't mention rollercoaster of emotion ... oh damn! ) is that different pickups suit different basses. You want two main things: natural sound reproduction and minimal feedback issues and it varies by bass (ply vs carved, fixed vs adjsutable bridge, string type etc) and by the amplification rout (preamp or not, speaker type etc). So in short I couldn't honestly tell you whether either of my FS pickups would be better for your bass than a Fishman BP100. They are generally thought to be quite loud, relatively resistant to feedback (no pickup can ever be feedback-proof as the DB is a big resonating box) and pretty good-sounding. Slobluesine loves his RB1 and didn't like the Shadow 950, I'm the exact reverse and its probably down to the vagaries of our respective basses. Happy Jack
Fair enough. DB's are complicated, aren't they?
bassace
Fair enough. DB's are complicated, aren't they?
Welcome to the world of DBs Happy Jack. Enjoy your bass. Some people get their BP-100 to work well and it'll be good for a starter. They usually need a preamp though for impedance matching. slobluesine
as i was the @*&$ who recommended and sold these to Clarky i think i should chip in with these quotes from other users... Taco Daves..... "Get em while they are hot people! These are high quality pickups and sound great. I would compare them to the deep lows of an Underwood with more volume and have a nice natural tone" Taco Daves V RB1 "I have both, and like them both. Dave's pickup is really tough made construction, no dainty little wires. Dave's pickup is more like a Bass Max in tone IMO than the RB-1. I think the RB-1 has a more complex tone, in the mids, but may not be as feedback resistant. The Taco Dave pickup has alot of bass, and picks up slap sounds well also. Overall I'd say that Dave's pickups are fatter sounding, and the RB-1 has more mids. The Taco Dave pickup is kinda like a Bass Max on steroids"
