ras52
So if I'm not mistaken, back in the days of "vintage" instruments, bass players wore clothes made of sandpaper and squeezed their instruments into cases lined with sandpaper, etc. etc... TheGreek
What is it with all these imitation "relic'ed" basses..somebody is going to make some serious money in a few years time renovating "relic'ed" basses.. thing is..this is just a fashion thing and most of those you see are done so badly that the fashion is going to change leaving owners with instruments that look like pieces of s#!t - rather than being timeless they will be sooo dated (early 2010/11!!!) lemmywinks
"that has be lovingly distressed and upgraded by a guy who relics guitars for a living (me). It really is a fantastic job and as you can see much better than then road worn series you see in the shops" Worryingly i don't doubt that he actually gets paid for this sh1t. He honestly thinks that this is what a well used guitar looks like.

My other passion is model railways, and this is happening in that field as well. 'Weathering' they call it, and when its done well it looks great. Some people call themselves experts at 'weathering' but they aren't experts at anything apart from ruining a perfectly good model. This guitar looks as though someone with a guide dog has done it. I mean that as no disrespect to anyone who needs a guide dog, but whoever has done this has no reasonable sight at all.
spinynorman
We did have a guide dog in the family for a while and I can tell you, the dog had more taste and intelligence than to do that to a musical instrument. She used to particularly enjoy "helping" me to load the car before gigs.

Al Heeley
Must have been a very satisfactory 15 minutes with a rotary sander and a blowtorch. I'd love to be able to 'do that for a living'. I would doubt very much whether any Fender dealer was authorised to have them, or whether Fender let them leave the factory. But I'm guessing, does anyone know if it's a possibility? I can only think that anyone who does that to a bass & thinks it looks good has never seen a naturally worn instrument in their life! The number of those fake logos that he's sold is scarey! How many will end up on copies back onto Ebay for the unwary? Edited May 18, 2011 by Big_Stu
purpleblob
Surely there's a law against such abuse of an instrument ?! Surely ?

You could either create your own using a graphics package or scan/photo a genuine one and print out on waterslide paper. Not quite as easy as printing a photo on normal paper but not much more difficult. Seeing the 'professional' make over this bass has been subjected to, I am highly suspicious about his decal sales. Anyway, if someone is dumb enough to buy this belt sander butchery victim then they obviously have no taste or common sense so perhaps deserve to be relieved of some pennies. tauzero
What a bastard http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Fender-Telec...=item3f09818ef4 No bass deserves such punishment. It's removed someone's chance of buying a pretty well pristine example for a reasonable price. Note: if somebody bought it to vandalise for their own use, fair enough. It's the fact that an instrument is still on the market but has been turned into crap that I find objectionable. I also find it remarkable that someone would pay £35 more for it in shagged than in pristine form. It just goes to show that P. T. Barnum's dictum "No man ever went broke overestimating the ignorance of the American public" is equally applicable on this side of the Atlantic. Still, given that Ebay and Paypal fees will mean he won't have made any profit on this, perhaps he'll be discouraged from wrecking any more.
