james_guitar
It seems that most of the double bass stands I have come across online are also for Cello and and it is hard to assess what the quality is like based upon pictures alone. Having had my reaonably okay DB stand go missing after a gig a recently, I am on the hunt for a high quality stand that is ideal for both home and live and won't run the risk of my bass falling off and breaking (already been there; not a pretty topic). Has any one in this forum got a high quality double bass stand they would be able to recommend? SO far I'm looking at both the Hercules and K&M models, although the K&M model is particularly confusing as they have just upgraded their old model and the new one looks a little cheaper in the photos online... What do you good people here think?

Clarky
I recently bought this Hercules model http://www.herculesstands.co.uk/product/85...uble_Bass_stand As stands go, its very easy to assemble/dismantle and is quite unobtrusive. The only disadvantage of the design is if the bass can tip forward if you brush behind it, since there is no retainer (the bass just sits on the stand)
Gareth Hughes
I have this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/basix_kontrabassstaender.htm It's okay - not amazing. The endpin cup sits a few inches of the ground, which means if you were to rest your bass with endpin extended in it, the bass would sit quite high and make it a little prone to toppling. However, it works fine if you position your endpin behind the front bar that's on the ground (hope that makes sense). Having the arms around the bouts is confidence inspiring. Is this the new K&M one you saw?: http://www.thomann.de/gb/km_141_mkii.htm This looks to address the endpin issue I mentioned. Hmmmmm, tempting. I previously used one like this for years: http://www.thomann.de/gb/stagg_sv_db_double_bass_stand.htm Only changed it because the lower arms that support the bottom of the bass were too low for me. This one seems to have movable arms. Edited May 19, 2011 by Gareth Hughes
james_guitar
Thanks for the tips guys! Clarky; Thanks for the recommendation; I was initially put off by the Hercules stands as they they don't look that solid in pictures, but upon reading many threads about double bass stands in the TalkBass forum, these seem to be the ones that get 100% positive reviews. There's a lot of bassists on there that use the Ingles stands, but complain about the rubber coming off quickly. My last stand looked similar to those ones (went missing at a recent gig) and it was pretty good, but I annoyingly had to adjust the endpin each time just to get it on the thing; at least with the Ingles ones you can adjust them to work with longer endpins. On TalkBass I've noticed that using a stand is generally looked down upon, particularly by pro/classical players (unless you're using it as a coat rock). They all insist it's much safer to stand your instrument up against a wall or in a corner, but I can't imagine that being very safe. They're also all worried about their pets knocking their instruments off their stands. Has any one outside of America ever had that problem?... Thought not. I can't imagine my cat wanting to take on my bull-fiddle. :S Part of me is still tempted by the K&M stand, but that type of design is getting very mixed reviews, so I'm wondering if the K&M effort is any better. I know they're great because German engineering is fantastic, but K&M do make some hideously overpriced stands and accessories. Take this guitar stand for example... TPJ
I get nervous just thinking about a double bass not in a corner or on it's side. It's not that I don't trust basses on stands, I don't trust the people that walk near and around them

Caution tho - it doesn't work so good, nay - NOT AT ALL - with an angled endpin. I found this out right at the interval of a gig in front of 1000 people. Put the bass on the stand, turned to walk off and something just felt wrong. Turned around quickly and saw my bass headed for the floor. Thankfully I had a monitor to my right instead of in front of me and the lower bout of the bass hit that first, delaying it from hitting the ground as I got to the bass in time. aonindy
I use the Hercules and find it extremly sturdy and stable. I'm quite happy to have the DB stand there for a while even with three large dogs around the house

I like the look of the Hercules db stand and may well invest in one to keep in the car. Btw the standard Hercules "grab" guitar stand on maximum extension holds a WAV + boomerang strap... ficelles
daflewis
just a note on my experience: don't go for a stand with a cup for the spike - i have one and if you're on a gig with quick changes it's a real pain trying to locate the cup, as you can't see it.... Clarky
As an addendum, I have had my DB on a stand for 15 years, despite a busy household with three kids (and countless kids' play-dates with loads of herberts in our house), and never had an accident yet. A crowded stage of course may present a different proposition ... and I have mentioned that there's no retainer on the Hercules

svenyonson
I recently purchased a Hercules stand. One common complaint is that you can't leave the endpin extended, unless you have yours extended less than around 22cm. This was a deal breaker for me as I didn't want to have to lay the bass down and push in the endpin every time I went on break, and reverse the procedure again before playing. To fix this problem, I modified mine by adding legs that I 3D printed and replacing the support arms with square aluminum tubing, which is much more rigid. The arms are also longer and as a result the stand is super stable. You could make similar legs out of furniture grade plywood. I also discovered that I can place my small amp on the stand behind the uprights which is really convenient and space saving on the gig. Sorry the image got rotated, I don't know how to fix that. I also shortened the front stubs that prevent the base from sliding forward, by about 50mm. It was too difficult getting the bass in and out otherwise. kodiakblair
I bought this Kinsman for £33 from Amazon. Discontinued now but eBay will have them. Need to hit it helluva hard to dislodge the DB. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003BNHJFW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=
JPJ
I've just bought one of these from Thomann. Well I've actually got two, thanks to my friends at ParcelFarce who managed to damage the first one, and unbox the second one 😤 Seems well built and sturdy for the money, and it has a retainer to prevent the bass from being accidentally knocked off the stand. https://m.thomann.de/gb/stagg_sv_db_double_bass_stand.htm

At first, the metal seemed a bit "lightweight" to me, and it didn't seem to be the sturdiest construction. But I've had it several years now, and it has worked really well - no sign of any accidents yet - and it did get bumped into by a singer, on a very packed stage - but no sign of it being displaced from the stand. Inexpensive, but effective IMO
