Fretless Porn

Putting new foam under my Fender/Schecter p/j. Wired stereo, tapped pu’s.
I also put some glow in the dark position markers on it….my eyes are getting tired on a dark stage.
I assembled this bass originally in 1982 using a 1971 Fender fretless neck.

The cat is of no help.

Ok so not my only fretless, but oh my god. Is it absurd to say I was expecting just a touch of buyer’s remorse? Not even a smidgen. Just glorious in every way. I have been lost in it since it arrived - I think only a couple of weeks back, but it feels like a year 😂

after that project.  The lower tap on the P pu quit working.  I had to send it in for a repair…ugh.

The Diva was my second bass. I figured, if I’m going to be shit and out of my depth on an instrument, I might as well be shit and out of my depth on something that is both gloriously beautiful and unnecessarily hard (ie, fretless). That it is so utterly lovely also convinced me to spend a lot more time with it.

My very first bass was a 4003s. And I loved that bass very much, too. Tbf, I loved the 4003s and the marleaux so much between them, that when I discovered fretless rickies existed i couldn’t resist. I absolutely 💖 both of these (tho if I’m entirely honest, the 4003 slightly more). The 4003 was also my intro to tapewound strings, which was yet another a very lovely introduction indeed.

Any excuse to post my fretless baby :D

Nothing major has changed... still an OLP body with a lovely edge-marked ebony-boarded Jaydee neck, and EMG-HZ pickup. The passive electrics have gone however, to be replaced with the 2-band eq from my old Yamaha RXB765A... I'd forgotten I had the eq until I found it in the depths of my spares box, so I routed out battery space under the pickguard and plumbed the guts in, and it's brilliant. In an ideal world I'd get a 3-band with sweepable mid, which IMO is the best eq for a fretless bass, but this is more than adequate. And I'm even getting to use the bass in my new prog project. Happy days :D

Back home after a few years, my Noguera Yves Carbonne Signature 8 Fretless.

It shouldn't have left home, now it's here to stay.

Here are my four little beauties.

1987 Japanese Fender Jazz 62RI with ebony fretless neck and Bartolini's.

2004 Japanese Fender Precision 62RI with rosewood fretless neck and Fender American 62 Vintage pickups.

Japanese Fender PJ with Status fretless neck and I believe Nordstrand pickups but I could be wrong. No idea on the date either.

1989 Fender Jazz 6wRI with rosewood fretless neck.

They all sound totally different.
