Bilbo
Linus 27 asked for a list of quality piano/bass/drums trios so here we are.... I have to start with Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz For Debby by the Bill Evans Trio. Both absolute must haves for this line up. Oscar Peterson Trio - something like The Complete Cole Porter Songbooks or Nigerian Marketplace Wynton Kelly Trio - Blues On Purpose Monty Alexander Trio - Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival (rocks) Marcus Roberts Trio - Time And Circumstance Lyle Mays - Fictionary Bud Powell - The Scene Changes Keith Jarrett Trio - Still Live (stunning) but almost anything with Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette (Changeless is a bit of a dud) Chick Corea - Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, Akoustic Band (any of them will do), Song of Singing and on electric bass..... Michel Camilo - Sundance Eugene Maslov - The Fuse Is Lit Also try Robert Glasper's stuff. That lot'll get you started
BottomE
+1 to the Monty Alexander. Another artist my dad introduced me to. Nice one, i had forgotten about him.
Clarky
The Bill Evans trio with Scott LaFaro on bass is unbeatable IMHO. I do like 'We get requests' by Oscar Peterson trio, which has some wonderful playing by Ray Brown, eg Have you met Miss Jones
grahamd
+1 to Glasper. Also Neil Cowley and Now vs Now
risingson
Michel Camilo's stuff with Anthony Jackson is just on another planet.

Bass playing at its best.
Hector
Great list, but I would add as absolutely essential: Avishai Cohen Trio - Gently Disturbed Phronesis - Alive Brad Mehldau - Art of the Trio (all volumes) Curios - Closer All really exciting displays of what can be done with the piano trio format, taking it in new (and in each case slightly different) directions. lowdown
Or a trio with no drums....[not essential of course - but a nice bit of fun] Oscar, Ray, Neils. 'You look good to me' Garry Edited May 19, 2011 by lowdown
Doctor J
I'd recommend Viaticum by Esbjorn Svensson Trio to anyone interested in this kind of thang. Or any E.S.T. for that matter.
Jakester
A couple of my favourite trio albums are 'Young At Heart' by the Tony Williams Trio (TW with Mulgrew Miller on piano), and also 'The Roy Haynes Trio' featuring RH, Danilo Perez and John Pattitucci. Here's some Roy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IC_8qmY1Cs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4r_RxJWVUQ And okay, there's no TWT vids, so here's the Quintet featuring the trio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrMlQvj71R4 Edited May 20, 2011 by Jakester
Jakester
And some great playing here, but shame about the dancing : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOH1H_s_Qdk - (Clark Tracey Trio)
ZMech
and if you don't feel the need for drums, Invitation is superb, it's just Bill Evans with Eddie Gomez.
Mykesbass
May be a bit too M.O.R for some tastes but Gene Harris' outfit, the Three Sounds is worth a listen.
Cyrene
one of my personal faves (even tho Bill Evans is the king of this stuff IMO) is Brad Mehldau's Art of the Trio series. In particular Vol.3: Songs (studio) and Vol. 5: Progression (live). As good as the format gets. flyfisher
I remember watching Oscar Peterson a lot on the TV and loved his playing. I don't remember the show though. Did he have his own series? This was probably in the 70s sometime.
