BassBod
Is there a leg-rest bit? What was the hole for?
alyctes
that's a sexy beast sadly, way out of my price range (and my competence)
North
There is a hole on the back as well which I assume is for a leg rest, but I don't have one, didn't actually realise they existed until now! Just been looking on the mo clifton website http://www.cliftonbasses.co.uk/ I don't know what the hole at the front is for, but looks the same as the one on the back - maybe one is for the stand and one is for the leg rest ? The hole on the front though,is in the same position as the volume control on mine-it looks like an aftermarket pickup to me,so the controls may have been removed. The hole for the stand is usually in the neck heel.
North
Thanks Paul, I spoke to Mo Clifton and he remembered the instrument - he advised me to sell it for £800. I asked him about the pick up, but he didn't mention anything about it being an aftermarket pick up. Also, the hole doesn't look like it is connected in any way to the pick up as its on the other side. The mystery of the hole continues
Yeah the hole on the back is for the leg rest. BassBod
Is there an electronics cavity on the back? Mine was built with mag/piezo pickups and a Bartolini mixer circuit. The balance control is in a similar place to the hole in the front of your bass...I'd guess it was a volume or balance control originally? I don't use the original pickups now (Fishman BP100 and Kent Armstrong mag) but it was a good system. A Realist has replaced it.
Mr. Foxen
Emailed the man himself about this:
Hi Oli, It looks like one I made for Allen Walley in 1993. It should be a perfectly good bass and the price is about right. (now £2100 new for one with body facing) There would have been a knee rest originally but that's not necessary for a lot of players playing standing up. (although sitting on a stool it's vital) Try Duncan's to see if you need the rest. About £100 if you do. Original Fishman still fitted - should be ok. Hole in front was probably for attaching hiprest when packing in case. let me know how you get on. I'm in France 'till end of June so can't make anything 'till july.
