This thread is useless without Cygnus X-1.
Is that a song or a reference to the taste of the compiler of the OP's clip? :)

Jethro Tull song in 5/4. Glenn Cornick on bass.

A shout for Franki Valli and the Four Seasons - The Night. Not complicated intro but just sets the tone for the whole song and a very good song it is too. Even includes hiss on the tape from the studio. Nice.

Good evening, all...

Being 'old school' (read 'old'...), I would suggest Jack Casady, with the Airplane, live...

...In a different vein (not really an 'intro', rather an 'intro/solo', there is Mr. Casady, and Jefferson Starship, with...

Now, for me, that's bass playing...

Enjoy.
I always like the intro to Rotten Apple by Alice in Chains -it's my music shop riff.

Good call. It used to be my soundcheck riff until someone recognised it. This was the next one which I still love playing to test a rig out.

Reminds me of Peaches a tad, prefer Dead Ringer's riff though...

Loved these guys when I first heard them, playing on the same bill as em on Friday...some great basslines.

Bit of Krist Novoselic never hurt :)
Ace of Spades - Motorhead

a bit cheesey but still great :)
^ You beat me to it! Incredibly simple but a truly legendary bassline by Lemmy on that one.

I'd also add (in a similar vain) 'The Day Everything Became Nothing' by NoMeansNo:

...and maybe throw in - on a totally different note! - 'Brown Paper Bag' by Roni Size:

From those on the OP's video, I'd certainly highlight Dazed & Confused, For Whom the Bell Tolls, 'Bites the Dust and N.I.B. Classics!

Give it a listen - it's worth 3 minutes of your life (IMHO)

Love it, and wish I could learn it.
Good call, that man!

Surprised there's not much mention of Martin Turner around these parts, I love playing 'Throw Down The Sword' and 'Ballad Of The Beacon'. (which neither of my bands will entertain. Boo!)

F.U.B.B. has a nice growly intro, too.

Or maybe this from Charles Mingus - lovely playing:

I'd also nominate "Turn the page" by Rush

and "Stone Dead Forever" by the 'head.

Also "Fish On" by Primus, kinda goes out of tune in places, but still a lovely line.

I've been listening to them for a while now, but that's the first time I've seen a reference to this band on Basschat. Terrific bass player... in fact he's the toast of the bass-playing world at the moment.

You've obviously not been hanging out in the "jazz" threads then! It was all the mentions on BC that put me onto Phronesis in the first place.

Ah, I tend to avoid those threads even though I like a lot of the tougher, current jazz ensembles touring around in London - like Flat Earth Society and Curios.

I got into Phronesis (what a ridiculous name) when I heard them on Resonance FM a couple of years ago. Couldn't get into the Vortex gig in February... sold out, unfortunately. Too many adoring bass players, I imagine.

Chris played the intro, but the verses were played by Matt Bellamy i'm "pretty" sure!

Also just remembered! Wrathchild by Iron Maiden! Wicked intro!
