Subthumper
Hi all, I just got a JBL 2226h 15" driver donated to me. As the topic title suggests I want to know if its any good for bass guitar and if so whats the best cab? Also looking at the Jbl specs its rated at 600w AES continuous. How does this relate to RMS? Lots of questions I know but just want to know if this speaker is any use in instrument amplification or more for PA/reproduction. Was wondering if it would be any good in the BFM omni 15 cab. Cheers Just Edited May 27, 2011 by Subthumper
alexclaber
Looks like it'll work ok in an Omni 15. Whatever cab it goes in it'll need a midrange driver to manage most bass sounds.

Subthumper
Excellent-time to get the tools out. Great excuse for a big cab.
stevie
The 2226 is a classic - a genuine, no-nonsense, high quality speaker. It was considered to be the most advanced 15" driver in the 1990s, was used by many of the big names in the PA business, and is still sought after by pro PA specialists today. The JBL has always been too expensive for use in bass guitar cabs, but that does not mean it won't work. I agree with Alex that it needs a midrange driver, but so ideally does every other 15" speaker. In pro PA systems it is normally used up to 300/400 Hz but JBL used it in systems up to 1k and it has an on-axis response flat to 2k, which is good enough for those who don't bother with a tweeter. Strictly speaking, 600W AES is not quite the same as 600W rms, but I wouldn't worry too much about the difference. It has a 4" coil, good cooling, and will handle lots of power. It was designed to be used in a reflex cab and JBL provides design info if you want to look for it. 100 litres is about right. If you prefer not to roll your own you could commandeer a Trace 1153, an ABM 15" cab (even better) and many more, and just replace the OEM driver. I wish I had your kind of luck
Owen
I used to have a home built cab with one of these which was built to JBL spec. It was great and dealt with everything I could throw at it.
stevie
So what did you do with it?

You get the picture As it happens, on reflection, if I still had it I would still be happy with it. I might well have another cab built that was not made of heavy 3/4 inch ply though. Those where the days - when heavy cabs were not an issue. That is no reflection on the driver itself.
markstuk
Looks expensive but I suspect he'll relist... JTUK
I have a couple of JBL 15"'s which can go to a good home. One needs recone. K and D series 140/150 types, IIRC.
stevie
If the K140 works, I'd appreciate it.
JTUK
The K140 needs a recone. The D series is in better nick, but knowing how the t$$$$$$ treated the bins they were in, I couldn't vouch for either
stevie
That's a shame. But it's a generous offer that I'm sure someone will take up. Edited May 30, 2011 by stevie
JTUK
Yes... basically someone hired them out to idiots..when I was abroad and I have two chassis in various states. One coil is fried, I am sure....the other may be ok.. they have been boxed up every since I took them out of the 4550 bins No idea about recone jobs on these and maybe the chassis are outclassed now. I do have to make use of a sub..so might play around with that idea...
