Bilbo Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 A lovely ballad performance by Andi Hopgood with yours truly on bass. There is something about the ambience created by the double bass in a ballad situation that just can't be matched. This is, for me, the first time I have really got a ballad to sound completely satisfactory. I have come close on electric but this is the real deal. Most of you will know the tune but not in this format. Enjoy! Quote
hubrad Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Nice one, Bilbo! I feel sure they could have shoehorned you a bass solo in there, though.. Quote
Beedster Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Nice work Bilbo. You're right, DB is just so right for that type of track. Quote
Skol303 Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 (edited) Superb; great work Bilbo. And a very nice recording too. Sun just breaking through the clouds over Manchester; coffee on the stove; this on the stereo... and all's good Edited May 28, 2011 by Skol303 Quote
Bilbo Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 Thanks, guys. I am quietly proud of it. We all want to do the next Teen Town but this kind of thing kind of seems more 'real' somehow. Quote
purpleblob Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 What a beautiful voice. Oh and nice bass as well Quote
ShergoldSnickers Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 It's no good... I'm going to have to ring the Cohen Brothers and tell them I've found a title track that needs a film producing for it. I can hear this as the credits roll by for some really classy Oscar fodder. Quietly proud... Yer daft bugger – it's much better than that and you know it. Quote

I love the performance overall but I find my own playing on it is not write as 'on' as I want it to be. There is nothing wrong with it per se (which makes a change) but I am of the view that the bass sound could be 'thicker' in some way. I did it with a mic and a K&K pick up which was a 4 string model (the bass is a 5). I have a 5 string pick up on the order and hope that may give a little more depth to the sound and, consequently, to the performance. It is, despite my reservations, one of the most 'convincing' jazz pieces I have for my 'cv'. Quote
Clarky Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Sounds good to me, Bilbo! Nice tone and playing. Quote
Mike Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Very nice Bilbo! I play bass for Andi from time to time and it's always a fun experience. Is it Alex on drums? Quote

It's certainly a bit more than convincing to my ears Bilbo. Love it, love it, love it. Quote

Simon Brown on piano (a lovely Steinway!!) and Gareth Lumbars on sax. Quote

PTB Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Nice work - very tasteful playing. Look forward to hearing more. Quote
Pete Academy Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Very nice version. Lovely playing and vocals throughout. Great use of space in the bass playing - complements the song perfectly. Quote
ZMech Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 great track, and some tasty playing too. I'd agree that the more expressive sound of a DB lends itself beautifully to the more soulful/ballad end of the music spectrum. Quote

Nice playing Bilbo, I know what you mean about DB for this kind of track. Did some recording on a very quiet song a few months ago and borrowed a friends EUB and it sounds soooo much better than a fretted electric it's not even funny. That was the recording session I got bit by the upright bug. Quote
lonestar Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Realy nice Bilbo. More fuel for my EUB gas that I,ve been suffering since trying one at the East anglia bass bash months ago Quote
