Bay Splayer Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 just found this on you tube bernard edwards using his famous "CHUCKING" technique GROOVY! http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=RFQcOrqQLN8&...feature=related Quote
SJA Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 sounds like he used a Jazz on the recording of that album, and stingray on the next one, C'est chic . Quote
Sibob Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Wicked!! I love that its this cool intro, then she goes to sing and its a massive chorus of people haha! Si Quote
SJA Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 ps. back in 1996 when the news of 'Nard's passing had just broken, DJ Norman Jay played this track on his GLR radio show in tribute. Quote

ped Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I think you would end up CHUCKING like our pal Bernard (he tried to swallow his bass) Quote

setekh Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 man, I really need to learn this bassline. any tips? the chucking thing seems a bit confusing.. Quote
nottswarwick Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 it is hard! Use a plectrum, but it can be played finger style, it is just really hard. I have to do it for a chic medley, and I cannot really do it right all the time, can just about get away with it live, but I would not like to record it. the man is a legend, and my fave player. Bar none. Quote
Owen Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Correct me if I'm wrong here (and I probably am) - chucking is like playing with a pick - but without a pick. Yes/no? Quote
tonyf Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Genius. Probably my favourate player ever. I got the 1996 "Live at the Bukodan" DVD a few months ago on import. Brilliant playing and professionalism knowing that he was so ill and would die within 48hrs of the recording. A sad sad loss. RIP Bernard Edwards T Quote

JJTee Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 (edited) Here's a couple more cool videos. First one is an interview with Nile Rodgers - with the classic quote at 1:25 about Bernard and what strings he used...brilliant! I think we can all learn a bit from that - it's not so much about your gear, more about what/how you play! Really good introduction to the world of Edwards and Rodgers, Chic & Sister Sledge, and the poignant story of Bernard's premature passing in Japan. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=s4VfG0oFe3k 2nd is a very short clip of Bernard and John Taylor of Duran Duran, during the Power Station collaboration, working on the bass break for Get It On. What bass is it that Bernard is playing? G & L? Stingray without a pickguard? I've got the Iron Maiden early days DVD - great documentary! Steve does his magical 'galloping' on that. His technique seems quite standard - if standard means 'awesome'. Quote
SJA Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Steve Harris does strum chords sometimes- which looks like Nard's chucking technique. eg. here at 0.35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpI49B6QVUY Quote
Stuart Clayton Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008
Steve Harris does strum chords sometimes- which looks like Nard's chucking technique. eg. here at 0.35 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpI49B6QVUY
Bernard also showed Nile Rodgers this a technique on guitar which Nile refers to as 'chucking'. It's basically about fretting a chord across all six strings, but only picking out the notes you want and muting the rest. Nile worked on this for a while and it became his 'style' of rhythm guitar playing. You can see him employ it on things like 'Le Freak'. Incidentally, check out the live Chic DVD's - they may not have Bernard on bass (it's Jerry Barnes these days), but the band is hot, and Nile is a funk machine! In case anyone doesn't know, I am publishing a Bernard edwards/Nile Rodgers book in a couple of weeks time - check it out at: www.basslinepublishing.com - there will be 5 copies up for grabs to basschatters in the form of a competition! You should also check out Daryl Easlea's book Everybody Dance: Chic & The Politics of Disco - amazing read. Cheers Stu Quote
