it is hard! Use a plectrum, but it can be played finger style, it is just really hard. I have to do it for a chic medley, and I cannot really do it right all the time, can just about get away with it live, but I would not like to record it.

the man is a legend, and my fave player. Bar none.

Genius. Probably my favourate player ever.

I got the 1996 "Live at the Bukodan" DVD a few months ago on import. Brilliant playing and professionalism knowing that he was so ill and would die within 48hrs of the recording.

A sad sad loss.

RIP Bernard Edwards

Here's a couple more cool videos. First one is an interview with Nile Rodgers - with the classic quote at 1:25 about Bernard and what strings he used...brilliant! I think we can all learn a bit from that - it's not so much about your gear, more about what/how you play! Really good introduction to the world of Edwards and Rodgers, Chic & Sister Sledge, and the poignant story of Bernard's premature passing in Japan.

2nd is a very short clip of Bernard and John Taylor of Duran Duran, during the Power Station collaboration, working on the bass break for Get It On. What bass is it that Bernard is playing? G & L? Stingray without a pickguard?

isn't that what steve harris out of iron maiden does as well?

I think he just plays really aggresively.

I've got the Iron Maiden early days DVD - great documentary! Steve does his magical 'galloping' on that. His technique seems quite standard - if standard means 'awesome'.

Steve Harris does strum chords sometimes- which looks like Nard's chucking technique.

Bernard also showed Nile Rodgers this a technique on guitar which Nile refers to as 'chucking'. It's basically about fretting a chord across all six strings, but only picking out the notes you want and muting the rest. Nile worked on this for a while and it became his 'style' of rhythm guitar playing. You can see him employ it on things like 'Le Freak'. Incidentally, check out the live Chic DVD's - they may not have Bernard on bass (it's Jerry Barnes these days), but the band is hot, and Nile is a funk machine!

In case anyone doesn't know, I am publishing a Bernard edwards/Nile Rodgers book in a couple of weeks time - check it out at: www.basslinepublishing.com - there will be 5 copies up for grabs to basschatters in the form of a competition!

You should also check out Daryl Easlea's book Everybody Dance: Chic & The Politics of Disco - amazing read.

Cheers
