Jono Bolton
I know there's a few: Who uses the Flat/Shape button on it? Mine's an ABM 300 and I was arseing about with it today because it's still new to me and thought I'd give it a go, and I actually quite like the sound it gives! Only tried it with the P, it's nice and punchy, and little bit middley/trebley but not bad, nicely rounded across all 4 strings. Will give it a go with the Jazz tonight too. I like the sound I originally had with it (everything set to between 1 and 2 o' clock, the 4 sliders pushed up to the third or fourth dot), but I like the flat EQ button too. I sit cheating to use a pre-set EQ? I feel it is
Hit&Run
I take it that the 'push flat' button is just an EQ bypass then?
David Nimrod
Sorry to be boring but I run the EQ on my ABM500 completely flat, and that includes the 'shape' button too. The EQ's on the amp. are great, but the tone controls on the bass, pickup choice, plus playing style are usually enough.

Jono Bolton
Sorry, wasn't very clear! There's a button on the ABM amps below the input knob. Pressing it in engages a pre-set EQ. Pressing it out engages the amps EQ, which comprises Bass, Middle, and Treble knobs and 4 EQ boost sliders (180hz, 340hz, 1.3Khz and 2.6Khz). David Nimrod
From the Manual:- PUSH FLAT / SHAPE - With this button in its OUT position a fixed E.Q. is superimposed on the preamp to give a bright but punchy character to the sound. Pushing this button IN returns the preamp to a Flat frequency response. This function may also be controlled from a footswitch. For the footswitch to operate, this button must be in its OUT position. jay249
It's a mid scoop, I don't like them myself, the flat sound works absolutely fine, it cuts out the mids, which you want, really!

I love the mids; lo mids, hi mids, all of 'em Scoop the mids and you loose the body of the sound.
jay249
This is true, but I'll admit to untrained and uninformed ears (not you Jono) it can sound like a bit of a magic switch, but you lose a hell of a lot of presence in a live mix, especially, if the mids dissappear. Welshbassist
I guess it sounds cool when it's out (when I'm just practicing at home), but not so good if you want people to be able to make out individual notes, especially live! Mines pushed in most of the time. Edited February 21, 2008 by Welshbassist
Machines
I 'push flat' when i'm at home. Haven't had chance to try it live yet so couldn't say if I like it or not. I think it sounds pants on its own but it might be really good in the mix...
