Annoying Twit Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I just don't like the sound of distorted/fuzz bass. Maybe I haven't heard the right example. Any recommended tracks that really show off distorted/fuzz bass? Quote
chrismuzz Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 For a sick example of distorted bass in a heavy metal setting, check out Walls of Babylon by Symphony X, about 3:10 in. It's not super duper fuzz bass but it sounds great! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA3DMiSVPyM Quote
Dudgeman Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I use it a lot in Our Muse trib. The secret to great fuzz is to use a bi amp system if you can..that way you can run your distortion through one channel and keep a clean signal through the other..it makes a MASSIVE difference to sound quality and will leave you wondering why you never did it before.....A huge amount of fuzz and distortion pedals lose nearly all of the bottom end..hence keeping a clean channel. There is a good fuzz sound on New Born http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhduQhDqtb4 at 1.28 or Bliss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMqsWc8muj8 you can hear the distorted bass best at about 50-52 seconds, when the guitar drops out. Bass in Starlight is another, although you have to factor in Octave pedals etc with that... Hysteria is another good one..I know how the sound is made, most don't, but I am not going to open that can of worms here..there are plenty of threads of good and bad info on how that was produced! Hope that helps..although it is a bit Muse biased but it is what I know best...lol The other great site to check out is www.bassfuzz.com where they test loads of fuzz and distortion pedals..I found it really interesting. I am not excane Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 ANYTHING by King's X. Doug Pinnick is one of my biggest influences in overdriven/distorted bass tones. Here's a song from the last album. It opens with the bass so you can hear it nice and clear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg3mUhGVCgo Quote
RhysP Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 "Think for yourself" by The Beatles (from "Rubber Soul"). First bass line I ever learned & a great old lo-fi fuzz sound. Quote

Annoying Twit Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 Thanks all. Hearing a number of examples helps, but I must admit that I'm still not a great fan of distorted/fuzz bass sounds. They have their place as a special effect in some circumstances, "Think for Yourself" being perhaps the classic example. But I still prefer a clean, compressed, sound with the tops rolled off. The problem is that I've always planned to upgrade my amp sim + effects, which I am semi-humiliated to say is just plugging into a Behringer V-Amp. And, yes, I know that's a six-string box. But, when I look at reviews of the widely used bass boxes such as the Zoom B2.1u, the demos seem to concentrate too much on distorted/fuzz bass sounds, which put me off. As mentioned above, the distortion loses the deep bassiness. And in the remainder of the reviews, I just don't seem to be hearing sounds that I must have. PS: Here's another sound I presume to be distorted bass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yLKsympUmM Quote
JTUK Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 The thing about most units is that you can EQ one string to sound decent but it doesn't work across strings. Try Starlight by Muse....but I would guess there is a lot of a split signal there..and that isn't practical for most people. The compromise is to play a simple line along the string that you EQ the best...so a simple line like Starlight can work with quite a basic set-up. Quote
Dudgeman Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011
have you been to the muse board?
Don't get me started. lol......I just let them get on with it, sit back and laugh! ;-) Re; Starlight...you can get a pretty good representation using one amp set up, I used to.. but it is better to run a clean amp with Octave and then a distorted channel and blend the two...I am pretty sure that is what Chris does. He plays high on the neck and there are definitely subs in there from his OC 2...technique is really important on Starlight..If you watch Chris play, despite having a machine gun three finger right hand technique, he tends to use his first finger only when playing Starlight..it gives it that metronomic feel and allows a consistency that is hard to beat even using 2 fingers.... dumelow Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 If you listen to the music that you like, and you dont hear a specific effect being used in any of that music, then yeah you probably will find that the effect is only used in music that you dont like. Quote
0175westwood29 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 probably an obvious one but i love cliff burtons insane distorted bass on orion and obviously pulling teeth but thats not exaclty a tone for a band setting. but as a curve ball i like the sounds the new bassist from the artic monkeys gets, i think he uses a dual rig tho but sounds wicked!
