fatboyslimfast Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hi all, I'm currently learning my way around the fretboard (i.e. which lettered note corresponds with which string/fret) and thought it would be really handy to have a little program that flashes a random note (C#, F, A etc) on the screen for a predetermined amount of time (say 1 second) so I can then attempt to play that note while it's on screen. Has anyone come across something like this? If it could play the note as well it would be really handy, but I'd settle for just the visual prompt... It can be for any platform, Mac, Windoze, Linux, iOS...anything really (ok, maybe not ZX81...). Quote
purpleblob Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Not sure if this is exactly what you want, but if you check out http://www.victorwooten.com/labs.html there's a fingerboard trainer. Quote
steve Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Think I saw an app called 'bass fretboard addict' or something like that which might (or might not) do what you're looking for Quote
Skol303 Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 There's an app on iOS that does this, called 'Bass Clef', but it requires you to 'play' the notes by tapping a virtual string on your phone, rather than just giving you random notes to play on a real bass - if that makes any sense? I came across it after being recommended by someone on Basschat (but I can't remember who!). Very useful and strangely addictive, in my opinion... Steve Woodcock Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Yes, here is one for Mac: http://dizman.free.fr/dantepfer/misc.html Quote

I haven't tried that bit of the app though - since I only used it while at work for a few weeks. Quote
fatboyslimfast Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 Cool, am liking them so far...cheers guys. Not exactly what I was looking for (haven't checked the Mac one yet), but some great tools there. The Vic W one is close, and should help with placement - hopefully transferring it to the real fretboard shouldn't be too much of a trouble. Esp useful are the ios ones, as I'm going on hols for a week soon and can't take the bass (missus' orders) so can practice a bit on the iphone! Quote

The goal is to play the note back on your own instrument right after it's been played by the program. My friend Jerome Sabbagh brought this one to me; he got it from Ben Monder. The exercise itself couldn't be simpler, but it's a challenge to do it quickly, particularly when the range is wide. randomnotes.zip" Innit?!?! Quote
fatboyslimfast Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 Will have a look at that one later (no Macs in the office!)...but sounds good. Addicted to the StudyBass notation one - can't get above Apprentice level! Quote
Happy Jack Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Strangely enough, I actually do exactly the opposite. I play a note on the bass at random, and then wonder what note it was. Quote

pr3d Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) do you mean something like that? http://snuggery.ch/random_note_namer/, Ive done something like that some years ago to pratice the notes on the guitar neck, tell me if it works for you... Its a very simple tool that just pops out random notes Edited December 25, 2013 by pr3d Quote
