Phil-osopher10
I have been trying and trying to work out this song for ages. I just don't know what techniques to use to get that sound! Any help would be much appreciated! Ben kenney joint custody, is the song. Thanks!
Phil-osopher10
I would link to YouTube but I'm on a silly iPad and don't know how to do it! Is it some sort of mute?
bassicinstinct
Judicious muting by non-fretting hand and appropriate EQ as far as I can see/hear. Nothing particularly difficult about it. Check out the Easy Star All Stars album Radio Dread for more inspiration etc.
BassBus
I'd knock the treble off altogether, keep mid flat and boost the bass a bit. I like the sound of the whole piece.
Phil-osopher10
So this muting business, how do I do that. It is something I think I really need to practice! But have no idea how to actually do it!

You could also try playing fingerstyle but flattening your fingers so you're playing with the fleshier part and not digging in so much, do that towards the neck of the bass and you might get closer to the tone you're after. I sometimes use both picking fingers together as it stops some of the harmonic overtones on the string developing and gives a bassier rounder sound. Phil-osopher10
Thanks a lot for getting back to me! I will have a go at this when I get home! I was trying muting over the weekend and I think I will have to really practice it, as I'm not used to having to weight my left hand. Poor technique I'm sure but everyone has to start somewhere.
