You could also try playing fingerstyle but flattening your fingers so you're playing with the fleshier part and not digging in so much, do that towards the neck of the bass and you might get closer to the tone you're after. I sometimes use both picking fingers together as it stops some of the harmonic overtones on the string developing and gives a bassier rounder sound. I was trying muting over the weekend and I think I will have to really practice it, as I'm not used to having to weight my left hand. Poor technique I'm sure but everyone has to start somewhere.
