Despite what the ladies may say, the most I can manage is approx 55 degrees.

Hmm.

I have no doubt about his technical excellence and it's quite clear that many people derive great pleasure from his playing - which is wonderful - but, and I'm truly sorry there has to be a 'but' - but I just can't get it.

I know I'm watching and hearing a genius at work but it does nothing for me. Perhaps I should see my GP about a referral to a suitable specialist as I know the problem must be within me.

Wow, the first video has that sound as if he's really digging in, yet you can see his touch is seriously light.

I can't comprehend how he is able to play PoT that quickly and remain clear, and his harmonics sound unbelievabubble. I do like the melody of PoT too, so nice.

You're saying there's no rhythm in those clips?
Astonishing.

There's a quote somewhere where he said something like "It took me 5 years to learn how to play it, and another 5 years to learn how to play it clean"

Wikipedia says this of the song: "It is considered by many a bass guitar standard, and is often used as a benchmark for a bassist's abilities". Better get practising.

It's fine not to like it, to suggest it's without rhythm is just incorrect, granted it's a rhythmic language with which you may not be familiar, but it has great time, great poise and great musical expression. That it doesn't reach a large number of people is immaterial, it's still greatness.

My thoughts as well.

Rhythm, lyrical expression - its all there.

I'mafraid I just put him in the same box as Jimmi Hendrix - very clever, but you couldn't pay me to listen to it... :)

The first video reminds me of a sat afternoon in a west end music shop, only no loud slapping, and the second reminds of waiting to die.

Just not my cup of tea im afraid

For years I used to think "wow, Jaco has double-jointed thumbs. How cool would that be"? Then I saw a photo. And laughed. My thumbs do that too, although maybe not quite as far. I didn't know other people's thumbs didn't do that!

I don't care if some don't like it. Its beautifully executed.

No rhythm? Yeah. Like a train :) A lot of popular music is based around a definitive and explicit beat. Boom, Whack, boom, whack, boom whack. All beat and no grove. Listen to Bach. No beat there either.

I don’t understand the problem that some people seem to have with Jaco

I’m no jazz fan but to me it is obvious that he was one of the greats who transcended his instrument and his genre, just like Hendrix, just like Louis Armstrong and a very few others……
